Hybrid or EB for freeway commute?

What is the most important thing? If gas mileage is king, of course it's hybrid. Highway will close the gap some but hybrid is clear winner. But EB is getting solid miles for a gas truck. So if she wants more zip, and especially AWD then EB is solid. With highway driving, changing road conditions at speed has me looking at AWD first and foremost. That safety factor is worth the gas difference to me. Hydroplaning, black ice, oils on the road, road debris, etc... The ability to shift power to other wheels automatically on the fly is peace of mind.

My hybrid highway mileage is 33-35 MPG at 75-80 MPH. This is taken from long distance road trips so you may get slightly higher if you're mixing in some non-highway driving

That’s almost identical to our C-Max. I can do better in the winter.

We're averaging 49.2mpg overall and usually seeing low-mid 40's on longer highway trips. Obviously, if most of your driving is a highway commute the delta shrinks, but if you are concerned about fuel efficiency and drive like you do, the hybrid is the clear winner regardless of the situation. If you need to tow or have a led-foot, ecoboost is the better option.

My wife is thinking of going with a Maverick for her next vehicle. She drives about 70 miles round trip to work each day. These miles are about 95% freeway (70 MPH speed limit). She is currently leasing her 2nd Edge AWD but we will most likely buy the Maverick.

I'm curious if anyone here drives the kind of mileage she does on the freeway with either the Hybrid or the EB? She does like the AWD on her Edge as we are in Michigan and do get snow, etc. Just wondering what kind of mileage difference we might see between the Hybrid and the EB for mostly freeway driving? Also wondering how well the Hybrid does in the snow, etc being that it's only FWD.

I have just over 17k on my ecoboost awd fx4 4k and I get around 30 mpg give or take a mile. The AWD system is great in the snow...like unstoppable. I live in Maine and I have had mine since October. I will say I have the optional tires on mine (were on it from factory) the 235 Faulken Wildpeak AT3W tires are the best. I drove out of snow that was piled up halfway up my doors and that was packed by snowplow at the end of my driveway. I only shoveled enough to open my door turned it on hit mud/ruts for good measure and just walked right out of it like it wasn't even there. Going down the road in normal drive mode I was easily able to handle storms that had most people creeping and I don't remember ever kicking my traction/stability control even once so I HIGHLY recommend the AWD ecoboost mavericks especially if you can get them to add the Faulken Wildpeak AT3W tires (don't own a hybrid so can't speak to it but had mine been a hybrid when I called the dealer that had it incoming I wouldn't have bought it it's a good thing haha)

In my area the speed limits are 55 mph. If I drive the speed limit and keep a light foot on the gas and brake I will average 46 MPG even when driving 70% highway miles.

Should add that the 30mpg is for highway at 70mph if we are talking more like 55-60 then I get about about 33-35 depending on if I really baby it driving normally it's about 33

It really depends on how you want to drive it. There's lots of chances even at high speeds to coast or run electric even for a few seconds here or there. Hills especially.

The thing is, where you will really see the huge increase is that 5 percent city driving. You may think it can't possibly make a difference but your eb will suck fuel in those miles where your hybrid might not even run gas at all. Ive seen it with long trips where I get off the highway the mpg rises noticeably after just a couple minutes off the highway

I'm moving to the Missouri Ozarks. Very hilly, even the highways. With all the on/off of the throttle the hybrid is going to excell.

I drive 750 - 1000 miles a week all highways going 65-70mph, and I average about 42 mpg in my hybrid Maverick.

As for inclement weather and snow, I drove my Civic in about 5 inches of snow and could make it home, so I expect the Maverick should do at least as well. Of course, NJ doesn’t get Michigan snow, but I’m sure that snow tires would be really helpful!

For reliability, I took my truck in for its first service at 12,000 miles and the dealership found no issues. I got the engine bay recall fixed and I’ll probably do shorter service intervals, maybe 7500 miles, just to keep an eye on the truck while it’s under warranty. I absolutely love the Maverick, it’s just enough truck for my current lifestyle!

I have a 2.0 EB AWD XL . I drive 92 miles round trip 5-6days a week. My drive is just about 70% highway/ 30% back country roads. I'm getting 32 mpg for months now. I just went over 8000 miles on my Maverick.

We live in the mountains of Utah and do a ton of winter sports (ie. snowshoe a few hundred miles each winter in the Wasatch Mountains). In the past 15yrs we've had zero situations where our hyundai accent and VW jetta (with snow tires) weren't completely capable in the snow; I'm not exactly concerned about our hybrid Maverick having issues.

The hybrid will always be more efficient. It's just up to you to decide whether that is worth not having awd or whatever else. A more highway based commute makes the mpg hit less severe but there will be a hit regardless.
