Hybrid Cold Start Rough Idle

My Hybrid just hit 14K; Now that is is getting cold out I have noticed the engine on cold start runs at a really rough idle until it warms up (abnormally loud too).

Opened the hood and the air box is clearly lumbering about abnormally as I hear an odd ticking noise.

Anyone else have this occur?

Had this problem with the remote start feature. Rough idle while it was warming up. Then after driving 5miles had to idle again for about 10 minutes and it started doing it again.
Restarted the Mav and it stopped the behavior.

No, but Ford customer service has opened a case for me.

Good luck, I’m taking mine in next week. I don’t expect a resolution honestly. I’m sure they will say they can’t replicate it or it’s “normal”. It’ll have to breakdown before they fix it I assume.

A lot of newer engines run rough for the first 1-2 minutes, part of some sequence to warm up the catalyst.

I have 2 Mazdas that exhibit that behavior. Sounds terrible, but quickly switches back to normal once some criteria are met.

But if yours carries on for a full warm up, that doesn’t sound right.

Since it started getting colder, I’ve noticed that a cold start on a hybrid does begin rather “agricultural” and then smooths out after 15-20 seconds to sound normal. Perhaps this is something the engine program goes through to get the cat hot? After that 15-20 second interval - all is fine. 6k miles on mine.

Did you ever get this resolved? My dealer is stumped.

My dealership would not apply the software update until they confirmed the rough idle for themselves (Keep overnight). I showed them the video's posted here but that was not good enough.

What software update? Was there a TSB noted in your paperwork?
