I saw this warning a few times and snapped a pic today. Apparently this is a known problem/issue/feature of some hybrids. Anybody know why we can charge in park but not in neutral?

The Generator motor needs to spin freely in neutral when ICE is running.
Therefore no charge is given to it in order for the normal effect of it being a generator to recharge.

Park has a pawl to hold it in place while the generator does it thing.

No ICE running?
Then the HVB is powering the 12V system, and depending on where you started with HVB SOC%, there is only so long that lasts with truck on.

What MY is yours? - I don't think my 24MY message is that long and complete.
Or it only throws that up when it's been awhile in neutral.

Every eCVT Hybrid works this way, just the way they are. Why do you need to put it in neutral anyway?

@HeyBales , it's a 24 XLT
@icegradner, I backed out of my garage and threw it in neutral to put my shades on. I rarely if ever leave it in neutral, and if you open the door while in neutral it apparently shifts to park unless you hit the low button, which I never have tried.

I just use brake hold for that, rather than neutral, give it a shot.

My understanding is that when the generator is generating it's current is supplied to the high voltage bus synced with the "resolver" to allow the current to be fed through the dcdc converter which will use that directly to supply any needs of the phased drive motor. Any surplus will be smoothed and converted to proper voltage needed by 12v buss(s) or voltage necessary to charge the HVB. When the generator is free spinning the dcdc converter will draw current from the HVB. This is the reason the "Temporary Neutral" with the L button pushed (at least in 22-24's) has a (30 minute?) limit after which the truck is subject to dropping into park so HVB can be charged. Maybe the HVB will be allowed to drop slightly below it's usual 30-32% SOC charging start point to assure the 30(?) minute temporary neutral time?

It's really just a habit from I picked up from driving so many years/cars with manual transmissions. If you don't want to move with the engine running it's either neutral or the clutch. Clutch makes it hard to jup out and get the mail our of the box!

I'll try to remember to give the auto hold a try - I actually forgot the Maverick had came with it!

Nothing mechanical shifts when you put it in "N".

It is a "simulated neutral" which means put no torque to the wheels and take no torque from the wheels (regen).

All the gears are still in mesh.
To have "zero torque" either positive or negative, you need zero power flowing, either positive (charging) or negative (discharging).

In a hybrid, "neutral" is like pulling the plug, whereas an automatic pulls a gear and a manual pulls a clutch.

Hope that helps with understanding.

Charging in park torque is being made but the parking pawl (pin) keeps the wheels from rolling. In "neutral" the pawl is not inserted by definition to allow you to freely coast.
