As a locksmith the correct term for the XL and XLT is "key with remote" or "remote" for the Lariat it is a "fob" or "prox" You can get a key without the remote which is much smaller. As far as the fob - you can get a universal smaller replacement but it wont have all the functions. As far as size heck yes Ford did make them huge compared to some other manufacturers - probably cheaper. A GM is much smaller and thinner - Dodge is about the same. For Tesla it is your phone :)

This use to be called a “Valet key”. Not sure if you could just have the dealer order one or have one made locally.

I do agree, Maverick key fob is comically large for it’s functionality. It could be slimmer. There are a bunch of Chinese replacement housing for key fobs that will change the profile of the fob. I have seen one where it deletes the switchblade key mechanism, thus reducing overall profile. Unfortunately, since it’s new, the trick is disassembling your fob and verifying that the internals will fit the replacement housing.
We can make a universal key that is smaller than the factory but it doesnt use the factory Ford remote board. As far as eliminating the switchblade - you still have to have a physical key to put into the ignition so unless it is separate ...........

Valet keys were made so you can give it to a valet parking the car - it does not open the trunk or glovebox. When they started adding transponder chips and factory alarms those went away from the manufacturer because usually without the remote unlock the alarm was triggered.

You can get an emergency key with chip programmed but the only pain would be unlocking with the keypad which disables the alarm or putting the key in the ignition fast enough so the alarm doesnt go off. A key without the chip will not disable the alarm on a Ford.

Lessons learned from this post:
  1. Some people have a sense of humor, while some do not.
  2. Ford isn’t the only company that feels that people want compensatory and/or conspicuous key fobs.
  3. Some people like to add huge things to their pockets, while some are OK with leaving room for what’s already there (regardless of size).
  4. Some people are deeply offended if someone else complains about something, thereby making them complain about being offended.
  5. Last, but not least, some of us simply wish that Ford made smaller key fobs because we already have too many damn things on our keychains—regardless of our sense of humor or manliness.
  6. Just another day on the Internet.

After conducting an informal survey, there seems to be a trend emerging: bigger and/or more expensive cars tend to have bigger and flashier key fobs.

Some interesting psychology at play here.

I’m actually accustomed to spending more money to have more features packed into lighter and thinner packages. Like cell phones, notebook computers, bicycles, outdoor equipment, etc.

Obviously smaller fobs can deliver the same functionality as larger ones, so I suppose that automakers believe that those who spend more money or buy bigger vehicles want fobs that reflect the status of their vehicles. Along similar lines, highly tech-heavy cars like Tesla are eager to promote the lack of a fob entirely (by using a smartphone instead), likely because their customers are on the thinner/lighter=better bandwagon.

I guess Ford wants us to feel like we bought “real trucks” by giving us a “big truck fob.”

I’m sure that many people are horrified to hear it, but I’d really prefer the little fob from my old 2004 Honda Fit. My wife and I have three cars between us, and the damn fobs are a PITA to carry around. I love the functionality of a key fob, but I also miss the days when cars had a simple keys that slipped unobtrusively on a key ring.

Before anyone flips out and condemns me for saying anything negative about my wonder truck, please note that I love my Maverick, and I feel fortunate to own one—despite a few niggles here and there.

But if he left key fob on the truck wouldn't it stay in "ready mode" and keep HVB warm and start ice occasionally? Maybe if he bought the safe he could put it in it if it was a good enough faraday cage? Then all he would need in his pocket is a piece of paper with the safe code on it.🤔
Leave the key in the cup holder or something.....I never take my keys unless its pouring down rain or something like that. Now with the phone app able to unlock and start I doubt key ever leaves it.

My friend's Escape SEL, which I assume will be the same as the Lariat, does indeed have a huge fob. It reminds me of BMW fobs from 2008ish, but still a bit larger. It seems unnecessary, but I think that about most fobs. Our G70's fob is also quite large. Probably the same, actually.
