I buy new and keep them for 10 years. Either I sell the 10 year old car or give it to one of the kids (all are married and have kids).

Depends on what is out. I’m 21 and this is my 4th new vehicle. Never been upside down or had negative equity at all. Get a car I like, have it for a while, test out the market if there is a new vehicle that I like more and go from there. Can’t find the perfect one if I don’t test em all out!

I see posts of people trading in 2020 and 2021 models for their Maverick. Or planning to sell them. And yes, I know the used market had absurd prices but that seems to have settled a little so maybe that's not as big an incentive now? Anyhow, how often do you buy a brand new car?

I ask because I haven't bought brand new in 27 years. Always slightly used to let someone else take the major depreciation hit. (I know that has temporarily changed over the last almost 2 years.) But the Maverick is so cool, so versatile and priced so cheaply, I had to order one. (It's great when kids graduate college , get employed and get off the payroll.)

So do people actually go upside down on loans, roll them into a new vehicle, have monthly payments of $500 or more or is everyone else like me and saving up to pay for the car without having to pay interest? Or take advantage of the 0% financing?

Long, rambling question(s). Hope that makes sense.
Depending on the interest amount I always finance my vehicles as I can make the funds work better for me in other ventures and not being tied up in a vehicle. The Model X would have been my highest which was around $1,500/month.

I'm 37 and this is my second new vehicle, first was at 20 when I bought a new ranger STX. Personally, I'm not sure I'll buy new anymore after the maverick. Prices are outrageous and I don't use 70% of the tech anyway. Only buying maverick because price wise it's comparable to what I was looking at for a used vehicle. I may continue to look at late 80s and early 90s trucks to find a project to restore while i drive the maverick, then trade the maverick in once paid off. Did I mention, I just don't use the tech in these cars these days? lol

Interesting responses. I keep vehicles for 10 years or more.

I hesitate to even consider a new truck in 2021 with all supply chain shortages, but the hybrid Maverick will fit my lifestyle better and save enough gasoline to justify buying it now instead of later. I have not tried to order yet, so I think I will miss out on 2022 anyway and be forced to wait until 2023. I am hoping there is a hybrid Ridgeline, Tacoma or something to give the Maverick some competition to consider if I have to wait until 2023.

I need to sit down and count all the cars I've owned in my 64 years. I can tell you I've had 3 cars in 4 months this year. Started off with a 2020 Mazda CX-30 I sold to Carvana for a $1500 profit, then I bought a '21 Bronco Sport Outer Banks, had that for 1.5 months, sold that for a $5k profit and bought a '21 Bronco Sport Badlands. I happened upon the Badlands, someone didn't follow through on their order and it became available. I was shocked when Carmax offered me $5k more than I paid for it.

Maverick will be the first new vehicle I purchase for myself, pretty much trying to save as much as I can for a down payment so that the monthly payments are as low as possible.

I have worked at dealerships the last 13 years, mostly GM. I always bought a 1 year old car every 4 years and certified them for me and every member of my family. Now used vehicles are no longer the deal they were by any means. We grabbed a 8 month old vehicle last year in May 2020 for my wife with 6k on the odometer for 2/3 of the original sticker price. That was the last deal on a used vehicle we got.

The last new car I bought was a fully loaded X-cab GMC Sonoma in 1999.

I buy all my cars new, knowing I will drive them completely into the ground on my commute. This will be my fourth new car driven into the ground, and those years will be fun!

Don't recall what I paid for it, but my neighbor wants to buy it when I get the Mav. It's got 46k and change on it and I told him I'd take 6k for it.
Where in FL are you? My dad has been looking for a Ranger unless its already promised to the neighbor.
