I used to have an '83 Datsun/Nissan 280ZX Turbo and later an '84 Cadillac Eldorado. I've been thinking about modifying my hood with the new long john hood extenders from RealTruck to bring that feeling back. Or maybe I'll stretch the bed and just drive backwards. I'll update y'all later.

This is actually an issue for me, not so much the length of the hood but more the slope (or lack thereof). I test drove The Chevy Colorado, Tacoma, Nissan Frontier plus a few SUV's before ordering the Maverick and I didn't find the Maverick bad at all. In fact it easily had the best forward visibility out of the trucks and was comparable to the SUV's I test drove. The worst was the Chevy Colorado. Nice interior but I almost felt claustrophobic driving that thing. Huge chunky hood that's basically flat horizontal with no downward slope. The upcoming Ranger doesn't look too bad in this regard. I might test drive one when they show up at dealers here, but the Maverick is really all I need and would save me over $10,000 compared to a mid-sized.

You will appreciate that hood, and all the room under it, if you ever end up doing any engine repairs yourself and have to fit your hands back behind the cylinder head lol

No longer, and actually slightly smaller than the hood on the '12 Outback I traded. I think the hood length is partially an optical illusion from behind the wheel, as it appears to be MUCH longer, since it doesn't significantly taper downwards at the front, and remains fairly high. It was definitely an adjustment for me, as I kept thinking it was much closer to objects than it actually was. After a couple of weeks I finally adjusted, and trusted the illusion.

Oddly, pulling to a curb feels more appropriate, and I end up the magic 4-6 inches away, while my Outback or wife's Crosstrek would be closer to 12 inches, unless I purposes cut in closer than it seemed I needed to.

I only find it too large when I go to wash/wax it, I can't hardly reach the very center. I had an older Ranger before, never had that problem. It does seem expensive when I'm stretching to try to get the center part closest to the windshield.
make very, very sure that you don't lean on the hood when waxing it. dealership tech did this while leaning on the hood to inspect a crack in my windshield. they took care of it, to their credit.

The Mav was the third car I bought because the first thing I test drove, the hood was too big. The second vehicle, the hood was too small.
The Maverick was just right.

You should probably test out some other cars until you find one like that. Just trade in your Maverick.
You‘ll never be happy with a big hooded car.

Is anyone else bothered by the size of the hood? To me, driving, it obstructs my view, and in my opinion is disproportionate to the size of the truck. Thoughts?
Nah, at first it always feels different in a new vehicle visually, I went from a Ford Edge to my Maverick and the truck is indeed a visually a bigger and more square than the Edge. But it’s been a year and it doesn’t phase me.

I came from a “right size” ‘04 Colorado, and it’s noticeable.
