Just glad you are OK.
That's the most important thing. It's also a testament to the relative safety of today's vehicles. Years ago getting hit from behind at 20 mph was likely to result in severe whiplash. As much as we complain about all the safety features that add cost the the vehicle, when we have an accident we reap the benefits even though we may not realize it

Like someone else pointed out it is the supply chain issues, parts issues, and salvage values are too high. It is more profitable to total it. People chant "unibody" as the problem, but every car on the road since forever has been unibody and has been largely repairable. This is a more recent development.

I had a taste of this when we lived in CA for a bit and my son had a Honda Civic at the time. The car was quite popular at the time, not a lot of used on the market, so resale and prices were high. Parts also were high. He was returning home from work in the horrific CA traffic and someone from behind him hit him in stop and go traffic at like 5 mph pushing him into the car in front of him. Damage appeared to be minor actually. Insurance company totaled it.

We were talking to the shop where it was at and the owner of the place gave us the scoop that the car was worth far more as salvage than as a whole car so most of them get written off. Looks like the same thing is happening again only now across a wide swath of vehicles. The used market is tight and getting tighter.

Well just wanted to post so you could add me to the list of totaled trucks from being rear ended.....maybe a 20MPH hit (I was at a stop)
Rear frame rail bent.....had truck all of 5 weeks - was working on mods so first post would be of my 25 Lariat EB sitting on Eibachs/ wheels/ exhaust/ tint and a bunch of cool accessories ....

So Ill just leave you with my review - decided to go back to a bigger truck again
Prior vehicle - 22 F250 PowerStroke- sold trailer so decided to go small
Other vehicle in garage - 19 Shelby GT350R

My review -

Positives -
Fun truck- cool turbo noises - handled decently for what it is .....just the perfect size truck for running to Home Depot.....I really liked the updated headlights on my 25 - the technology was great- 360 cameras exc... I mean the truck was flawless for the few weeks I owned it - I actually made room for it in the garage as the more I drove it ...the more I liked it....with the black out package - loved the black painted roof

Negatives- aluminum frame that totals out the truck way too easily.... could use a little more power for acceleration - I wish the interior was a little higher quality
Prices have crept up over the years ....

If not for the frame rail things- would highly recommend truck to anyone who wants a fun little truck that is the perfect size (this coming from an F250)

anyways- just wanted to leave my take - I might still stop in here or there to say hello - but I cant bring myself to buy another one when they get totaled out this easily .....
If they rear-ended you and totaled your truck, shouldn't that mean they are buying you a new truck? Or did they not have insurance?

On the Maverick and Bronco Sport (according to the shop) its a different problem......they can get all the parts.....the issue is once the frame is bent, on these specific vehicles it is impossible to bend it back...you have to replace the entire unibody .....they said every other unibody vehicle ...you can bend the frame back but Ford uses a specific steel on these 2 vehicles that can not be heated up or it loses all structural rigidity ......

Yep I just picked up another F250......larger then what I need right now.....and I loved my little Maverick ...but I was a little too surprised at the ease with which it was totaled

I will say this....from a safety perspective....that little truck did its job......I was sore for a few days and within a week back to the gym and feeling great....lots of people were telling me I should have gone after them for hurt neck exc. but I guess Im just not that type of guy.........

Ooops sorry- not aluminum - Boron Steel
sorry about that @dalola @icegradner

The body shop told me that the Bronco Sport has the same issue- and that almost every Bronco Sport or Maverick they get in ends up being total losses : (

The body shop is telling you the truth.
Boron steel frames can't be straighten or repaired without affecting the integrity of the steel. If a Ford vehicle is financed through Ford Motor Credit and has damage to the boron steel frame. Ford will not accept a repair. The frame must be replaced. It doesn't really come down to the cost of the frame, it's the labor involved in replacing it
When the rear frames on a Maverick are bent. This is what has to be replaced.👇
Ford Maverick Hello and good bye : ( Truck totaled before I could make my first post .... 20241119_103840

  • Extremely High Strength: Boron steel is a type of ultra-high-strength steel (UHSS) with very high yield strength, making it resistant to deformation.
  • Manufacturing Process: The process used to create boron steel involves extreme heat, which makes it very strong but also brittle.
  • Risk of Cracking: Attempting to straighten a damaged boron steel part will likely cause it to crack.
  • Heat Sensitivity: Applying heat to straighten the frame weakens the boron steel and compromises its structural integrity.
Anyone who says that they can some how repair or straighten a bent Boron frame without affecting the frames integrity. Has little or no Integrity themselves.

Oh no... My wife and I have our own Maverick... My son has a Bronco Sport. Hopefully none of us get rear ended, but living in Massachusetts our chances are high.

Well glad at least it sort of worked out for you. I was rear-ended on the highway when I stopped for an accident and then the lady behind the lady who rear-ended me rear-ended her and pushed her into me a second time, luckily no damage was done to my vehicle, like none at all, lol. But both of them were messed up...
