My understanding (which may be completely wrong) is AS/S was a way to game the rating since total mileage per tank would be improved by not running the engine at traffic lights. The EPA is removing that as a factor by making it reflect the actual engine efficiency. So, the incentive to include AS/S is going away while also adjusting the CAFE standards down.

It isn't only that. I care, but I can tell you my daily commute is mostly stop signs. I stop, engine shuts off, restarts, and I drive away just as fast as you read that. Completely useless and very annoying.
I would have no issue at all if the ASS was able to be set to off as a default. When I hit heavy traffic, longer stops, ect.. I would enable it. But I honestly wish I could default that stupid thing to off and not need to hit the switch every time I start the truck.

So with a switch, and I read most cars and trucks have it, seems like a win-win. Everyone should be happy.

And with Forscan, or other programming skills; you or a
Dealership CAN change it to default to off.

I've read of people doing it.
I've seen it accomplished in person.

Much ado about nothing.

Pushing manufactures to innovate and improve their technology is worthwhile. It's probably the reason why we have the hybrid Maverick in the first place. Now, there's certainly a discussion to be had about going overboard or using incentives rather than penalties (which is essentially the same thing just framed differently, à la "cash discount vs credit up-charge") There's also the discussion of financial reasons we're in this situation with regard to things like the chicken tax, etc.

If manufacturers aren't incentivized to innovate, much of history shows that large businesses with often times start colluding and allow their sector to stagnate (don't need to invest those dollars in capex and research!), which is bad for the consumer.

Just for the people that state that they hate the stop/start tech... it's practically unnoticeable in the hybrid Maverick. I've driven large Ford vehicles before (full size trucks and vans) and I definitely prefer the Maverick Hybrid in this size class. The larger trucks are starting to use hybrid power boost tech which may also allow for instant start and full-time HVAC in an engine off condition.

Are you going to link to the "source" or just assume we'll believe you?

Steve
It was said on the internet so it’s gotta be true.
Let me sell you a used car.

I believe you can buy a kit as well. I’ve seen ads on the Velocity channel, just don’t know if they have a Mav model.

The EPA requires manufacturers to default their vehicles at startup to whatever settings they used to do their EPA mpg tests.

If they defaulted auto start/stop to the off position, the EPA test results on every car in the fleet would go down by 2 mpg. Each mpg drop will cost them $140 per vehicle sold, in CAFE fines. So $280 per vehicle x 2.078 million vehicles = $582 million in lost corporate profits.

I hope the source was accurate: the Trump EPA has ended the auto stop/start regulations.
3 step routine every time I get in my truck. I start it, click my seat belt, and push the "off" button for the automatic stop/start...every time...

Lee Zeldin ( EPA Administrator) has this and other such "feel good about saving the planet" nonsense in his sights. Perhaps my source was wishful thinking ( Liberty Daily 7/30). It sounds like the credits/incentives are going away the question is when.

the issue with everyone quoting the regulation stop is that it's being held up in court right now with California + other states suing and pending a hearing date later this year. Then if California loses it will file a jury trail THEN if they lose it will go to senate or whatever tf. UNTIL the court case is done the rules are upheld, california stilll has smog, Manufacs play safe and make stuff the same way. I guess right now california has a 1/3 chance of winning, but theirs always a counter suit regardless. TLDR: This is just the start of possible change not it actually happening

fuel saved is fuel saved my guy. If anything, the unrealistic way the EPA drives the cars they rate is the real problem with the ratings

The primary purpose of the EPA ratings is to create a standardized method to implement fair CAFE credits/charges across the OEM's, and provide consumers a way to compare FE among different makes & models. It has much less to do with the FE you might actually get.
