Hey! I have a 22 xl awd ecoboost, and I bought another turbo with the hopes of having that sent out to be upgraded so I could limit the downtime of my truck. Before I did I thought and wanted to see if anyone else has had the thought of adding a second turbo and it would be alot of work but how would we do it if anyone knows.

Not sure if it would be worth the effort since it's only a 4 cylinder. Now if it was a V/6 or V/8 then i could see it helping as you could use a Turbo on each side like the Eco Boost V/6 Engines do.

There is a forum member named “deuces” I think who installed the bigger turbo from the Corsair 2.3l
The search function will help you find his informative thread. I would link it but I haven’t learned how yet…

That would be the way to go IMO instead of trying to add another Turbo.

When I first read the OP I thought he wanted to go “bi-turbo” on his Maverick. But now I think he meant to get another turbo to upgrade while still driving his OEM turbo - and then swap it out after?

His last sentence He was talking about adding another turbo said it would be a lot of work and asked how hard it would be?

I think you’re right lol. He did say he wanted to “add another turbo”. I hope he is very mechanically talented!

Yes sir, At first I did want to get a bigger turbo and still might see that as a more attainable option but also that it would be cool to go bi-turbo but I know that is exponential more involved.

  1. Assuming that the turbos are identical, you put a turbo on each side of a V6 or V8 in order to minimize the runner distance and therefore induce more turbo lag. A second turbo makes no sense on a straight I4 or I6 engine. The 2.0L with 21 lbs of boost already has almost no perceptible turbo lag due to the short runners, fast spinup of the smaller turbo and smart fuel curve mapping for the instantaneous boost pressure.
  2. There are some vehicles with asymmetric turbos not to increase hp but to extend the torque curve. Quite a few BMWs did this setup. I had one of the few 2013 Ford Fusions built with the pre-production Spanish 2.0L that had the 2 turbo trick and it was a rocket. The fuel usage with your foot in it was insane though. The Fusion 2.0L engines built in USA switched to a dual-vane single turbo to get somewhat the same effect with a bit better fuel utilization, but it didn't pull the same tire-shredding performance out of the engine.
  3. Just putting in the Corsair turbo will not work well. The turbo size is closely matched to the airflow, so unless you are going to do a serious porting job, bigger valves and a matched intake manifold, bigger injectors and a race-only open exhaust system, putting a bigger turbo on is not going to spin up as fast, not going to spin as fast and is consequently going to make less hp than the stock setup with a lot more turbo lag. Maybe using the Corsair head, intake and exhaust manifolds, turbo, wastegate and computer would work, but I doubt that anybody has bothered to do this properly yet.

Just keep in mind your reliability, from what I heard the transmission is at the max for what it can handle in torque and HP.

Thanks everyone so far y’all are the best! For me I really like my Maverick and reliability is of course a concern as it’s my daily driver but I just can help but to try and make it “as cool” as I can call me whatever, but this is what we’re here for right? Hopefully we can all learn something from someone else and share what we know.

Be the first one to do a sequential turbo setup! It would be soooo cool! Don't listen to these naysayers.

Put the entire 2.3L EB drivetrain from a Corsair into the Maverick...transmission and PTU included...should be wild after you "hotted up" the 2.3L ....I had a 2017 MKC with the 2.3L EB motor in it and boy oh boy, that thing moved right along just dandy!!

This is the answer. ;)
I suspect there will be some packaging challenges and engineering to overcome due to the space constraints.

Haha

But, this 2.0L would also take to a Big Turbo and tune as well.

even if you can just get 25 lbs of boost from 2800 to redline, it'd be a very noticeable upgrade imo.

3rd Gear would be a beast from ~25 mph to 60+ :D (3rd gear in a Lobo = 4th gear in a Non-Lobo)

Bring out the EcoBeast!
