I was lucky enough to receive a phone call from my (SoCal) Ford dealer that they had a Lariat hybrid with everything on it arrive with no buyer. They sold me the car at MSRP. I love the truck. I have a XLT hybrid order I am still waiting for that my dealer said he believes will be built this model year. The question is: How do sell the the XLT—do I buy it and resell it or do I try to sell my order to someone? Here in California these trucks are selling for $5K-$10K over MSRP.

"Tailender" is correct. If it gets built, the Dealer owns it. If you decide to purchase it and resell it, just remember to factor in the capital gains taxes you will owe the government along with all other normal fees, taxes, etc with a vehicle purchase in your state.

You just have to run the numbers and that is simple to do. See what it costs out the door with ttl, any doc fees, etc. When you have that bottom price, then figure how much you can get for it from Carmax, Carvana, another dealer, a friend, etc. Then figure any capital gains tax on the profit. While sometimes you can legit make money, other times it is just a washout. Your money, your decision unless you need to be a two Maverick family.

Not familiar with CA DMV laws, but if possible, I'd buy and sell it. Get temporary plates so it need not be registered, and don't drive it - lest something bad happen. You should be able to get whatever the market will bear in your market territory.

I think you might find it was not worth buying and then selling. You have sales tax, dmv fees, etc. Car will be registered by dealer. Dealer will not do anything to make it easy on you. You will also have to lay out the money to buy as financing will delay any resale.

You said you got lucky on your Lariat. Why not pay it forward and let the dealer sell it to some other lucky person.

This is not possible... The OP must complete the purchase for this vehicle from the dealer, as @OleFordGuy indicated. Completing the purchase means paying for the license, registration, and taxes (about 11% total in CA).

If the dealer sold you the Lariat Hybrid at MSRP, expecting you to leave the XLT Hybrid order with them, I would honor this deal and let them have it to resell. If not, why don't you cancel the order and improve the odds that someone else with a COVP-approved order receives their Maverick?

Thanks, I like the karma angle. I think that’s the answer.
