Buttons please. Quicker/no guess work/screen goes down at least I can still control my hvac. The 25 screens look cheap. Automakers slapping on cheap tablets onto dashboards has got to go. In 5 years those screens will look outdated. Buttons on the other hand will just look like a button, and it will still work

Hold up. The new screen looks cheap and dated? But the 8" w/cubby and less brightness than an Ohio winter day doesn't? LOL.

Let's revisit this in 5 years. I bet there will be no going back to the excessive number of mechanical controls, but we'll see. Progress cannot be stopped, it's our choice to learn and adapt, or to cling to the past. There is no going back to manual transmissions, or to film cameras, or to "dumb" phones. Car tech is not conceptually different.

How long had that debate "film or digital?" lasted after digital cameras had become widely available on the market? I think about 5 years or so, before the "film" people made peace with it.

I anticipate the "mechanical or on-screen?" one to last about that long.

Well one thing to remember...
Since you will be touching the screen, as much as you touch your phone.... you will have to clean both more often.... since a toilet is Cleaner then Both..

The screens are here to stay but they are a distraction. The need for the tactile feel of buttons won't go away. Automakers are already seeing a backlash and some are reversing their decision to go full screen controls. The only thing that will allow full screens with no physical controls will be 100% reliable voice commands to replace physical controls. They're not there yet.

Yep, and that will open up a whole new era of gripe threads. I’m not nearly retirement age, but I don’t talk to machines, and I’m not alone.

I'm old enough that I talk to the air. So talking to a machine will be a step up for me.

On a different thread someone had said that at least if the display goes down, they could still control the heat and A/C because of the manual controls and cables. What most people do not realize is that almost no controls have actual push buttons and cables anymore. Everything sends a signal to one of the many control modules in the vehicle to change things. This was very apparent when I had the heat controls go down on a company vehicle. Neither the touch screen nor button controls would do anything. When I pulled the touch screen and the dash control panel both were just wire harness going to the body control module. I then had to hook up a multi direction scanner and go into the module and try to control things. After I was able to control things like the blower fan and temperature with the scanner, it was time to look for the wiring problem. Ended up being a wire connection at the fuse box that had become unplugged (bad connection) or was never assembled correctly to begin with. Don't think you will ever see things go back to manual switches and cables again.

Interesting because Tesla and Ford don't use Siri for voice commands.

Sounds like you've made up a scenario that involves Apple and CarPlay.

Apple certainly. My phone is an iPhone and it supposedly plugs into the car audio and can use voice commands. Obviously that is ambitious.

Yeah, I'm pretty old and used to talk to the air also! But I found out it is way more interesting to talk to myself. The fun thing is I get answers back from myself that I like. Better than the wife's answers for sure, but don't tell her that!
