Gas mileage pulling 3,000 lbs question. I am concerned after reading somewhere that my Lariot 2.3 still on order will only achieve 11 mpg. Confirm?

I have no idea where the article came frome, but am concerned about significant mileage drop in 2.3L Lariat. Mine has been on order well over a year and now having second thoughts. Can anyone confirm performance?

I assume you mean a 2.0 Lariat since there is no 2.3 Lariat. Towing mileage is like any other mileage - there are variables. If someone is towing in hilly terrain, pedal to the medal, etc. it is possible. If someone tows sensibly, I think it will be much greater. I have friends who say that the real numbers with that kind of weight is 18 or so.

As mentioned, there are too many variables to accurately answer your question.

A more detailed description of what you are towing, and where, might lend to some general thoughts. Tow weight is only one small part of the formula.

It's possible pulling something heavy or not very aerodynamic will cause you to not get much more MPG than a full size truck, the small engine has to work very hard, but the upside is that when you are not towing you are using 1/2 the fuel of a full size truck. It's a trade off, & depends if you tow alot or just occasionally.

What kind of fuel economy do you expect while towing 1.5 tons with a small displacement gas turbo 4 cylinder?

Your fuel economy savings buying the maverick is when not towing... So how often do you plan on towing something that weighs almost as much as your vehicle? Yes it is a 4 cylinder engine and uses more fuel when working harder, but again it depends as others have stated many different variables, up hill/down hill, etc... including the style and aerodynamics of your trailer. If you plan on hauling a lot, then you'll probably want to look for something else?

I like the wording of this document.
"Considerations"
And
"(Exceeding) may significantly reduce the performance of your towing vehicle."

No where does it say it will be illegal or make your truck explode. Though caution: this concept may make some heads explode.

It also says:

"The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) testing standard J2807® defines procedures and requirements to determine gross combined weight ratings (GCWR) and to calculate the trailer weight rating (TWR) for any tow vehicle. This standard establishes minimum performance conditions to allow for consistent comparisons between similar class vehicles. Ford will apply the SAE standard to all vehicles."

So ratings are not absolute values.
They are so you can compare one truck to another, fairly.

A 2.3L Lariat would be a ranger not a maverick.

84 BMW plus back seat full for 2 weeks on the road. Start of trip 24.5 mpg. I got my first ever weather warning on Apple Maps, severe winds. Heading out of Yuma towards SoCal into a 50 mph head wind with gusts to 70 mph, the hood looked like it was going to come off. Semis and motor homes all off on the shoulder. I got 13.7 mpg over 159 miles.
