FWD here in Tejas, don't want or need need AWD. Did not buy for off-road use. I stay home if there is just a hint of ice. Did not want the weight penalty or maintenance requirements of the extra drivetrain hardware. So far very happy with the performance and economy of the EB. W/O A/C, it beats EPA measurements. With A/C it is slightly below. Has a solid suspension, soaks up bumps without bouncing all over the place like RWD body-on-frame pickups. Great lateral control. Only nitpick is the buzzing of some plastic panels on certain road surfaces.

Cons. Can't fit a bottle of Corona in the center console and close the lid.

Let me ask this... since the Maverick is FWD until it detects slippage, what reason is there to not get an AWD version unless you simply cannot order it or it's not available? It's not a full time AWD vehicle. Can you turn it off? No. But it doesn't use AWD until it needs to. Subaru's are AWD all the time. The Maverick has a part time share in this job.
I'll give you several reasons why I didn't opt for AWD, first of all I don't need it, I have driven FWD cars in foul weather since 1985 & can count the times on one hand that I could have used AWD & all the roads are paved where I live, second there is a mpg reduction, not big, but it's there for the life of the vehicle, three, AWD has many more parts to wear out or break, again that I don't need to have. Acceleration is also slightly better in normal driving due to the less weight & rotating parts, not a lot, but also a penalty for the life of the vehicle. I also spent $2200 less for a FWD version. Some people will say it has better resale value with AWD, I buy a vehicle for what I want, not the next owner.
