I got a chip in the black top of the windshield on my xlt. Safe lite replaced it, it had turned into a crack before I noticed the chip. No more than 36 hours later , new chip, 1 1/2” from where the other was immediately turned into a crack. I have had several chips throughout the years always been able to repair before they cracked. Has any one else noticed what seems to be a weakness in the top of the windshield?

I don't think these windshields are any less durable than others. Too many variables when road debris gets flung at you. This is not including the windshields that cracked early on due to improper sealing.

Literally every single car forum has these same threads claiming that whatever model has "weak" glass. It's not weak glass, it is strong road debris.

I saw 3 Mavs on my way home today and one had 2 huge cracks in the windshield. I have 2 chips in mine too. All happened within 2 months of ownership and nothing since.

Yup, Ive spent time at Safelite for a chip which was repaired for free. Currently have a chip but not deep enough for Safelite to do any repairs.

Lucky, my tiny chips went to cracks in a heartbeat

If you are in a situation that your windshield needs replacing, I wonder if you can opt for the acoustic one that is used on some Lariat models, if you offer to pay the difference.

What is with these "Fragile windshield?", "Soft Paint" posts on this forum.

You get hit with a rock and stuff cracks or dents.

These things happen all the time. Nothing new here except trying to blame what got hit as being inferior. Just a bunch of nonsense.

Sorry to have hurt you huunvuu. I Have owned several different cars from several different manufacturers through the years. I have had many chips repairedand a few windshields replaced. The question is both chips, both within 1 1/2” of each other both in the black edge of the top of the windshield quickly evolving into cracks. Curious coincidence, new model. Didn’t seem like an unfair ask.

The rocks are bouncing off the soft paint into the fragile glass!

Class action!

It's the same every car forum, but this one is the worst in terms of how people start new threads about the same topic day after day after day. It's not a conspiracy. Some vehicles due to their shape and angles of the glass might be more susceptible, but "soft paint" and "weak glass" are pure nonsense. I cracked the windshield on our $65k E-class changing the wipers.

I can't believe it has to be explained again and again that if you get hit by a rock the paint will chip and the glass will crack.

I actually stumbled upon this forum because I have had my Maverick Lariat for about 3 months now and within the first two months I was hit by a rock in the upper windshield near the mirror and instead of it chipping there was immediately a 3 inch crack. By the time I made it home (about a 1/2 hour drive on freeway) the crack was 7 inches and not repairable. Within the next couple of days the crack had spread across the windshield and split off in a couple of directions effecting my visibility. I have been driving for over 30 years with multiple vehicles and have never experienced anything like that, and was trying to figure out if this was something other Maverick owners were experiencing or if I was just having some bad luck. I recently heard the windshields are installed under pressure and that is the reason they react so quickly to a small chip, but I don't know if there is any truth to that.

I will say after fixing my windshield I tried to get the Permaplate installed, an $800+ option my dealership was offering which I had previously declined, but so far my dealership has been giving me the cold shoulder on me trying to pay out of pocket for it.

I saw another post saying it could be the angle of the windshield etc. which I could also see there being some validity to that. It's just frustrating getting a chip and not having time to get it repaired before you have to replace the whole windshield. Hopefully my experience is unique as this will get expensive real quick with my current $500 deductible with each occurrence for my insurance.

Get outta hear! That scratch on my door was totally malicious intent, by the person with horns, who stalked me because they saw my sweet Mav and were jealous. They keyed that super long (1") and super deep (barely clear coat), scratch and now I have to have the whole side of my Mav repainted for $5000 to be made whole again!

Totally legit to start the 100th thread about that kind of thing 😜.
