We need to manufacture the robots in USA in addition to the vehicles:)
we'd also have to source all of the materials we make the robots with in America, too.

I'm surprised it wasn't a larger loss considering all the headwinds from tariffs on imported vehicles and steel + aluminum, plus a big slowdown in car buying.

Pretty interested to see what Ford is planning for a "model T moment" with EVs next week. Affordable EVs made in America by a company that's not led by a kook would be an amazing thing, and also be a benefit for hybrids / plug in hybrids. It's a big gamble though after expensive luxury EVs have largely flopped.

Most of the recalls I have seen on Ford's are software related. If those are he result of employees, then terminate and rehire. That will solve the lazy issue.
As a professional software engineer I can tell you with a great deal of confidence that this is a great way to make things worse, not better.

if you think the current software devs are the problem just wait until new people with no familiarity with the codbase get involved and see how much “better” it gets while they stumble around blindly trying to figure out the project layout and standards.

generally speaking, if software releases in an unready or insufficiently tested state, it’s almost always due to a deficiency elsewhere in the SDLC. More often than not, the blame rests entirely on management for pushing unrealistic timelines, eschewing important testing, or both. There is also a management culture currently in software and software-related industries where dedicated test engineers practically don’t exist anymore, so test depth and test quality in general has suffered greatly practically everywhere. It’s a damn shame and I hate it but I have no control over it.

all of it comes down to management culture, bet on it. Managers are a dime a dozen. The only truly unskilled labor that exists in the world are product and executive management. Replace them and leave the poor devs alone lol

replacing management, especially CEOs, is one of the best things AI could do.

A lot of the recalls LOOK like software, but they've thrown it on the programmers to mitigate hardware flaws, and/or detect the 1 in 10,000 defects before they cause damage.

A lot of it would be "swept under the rug" problems in the 70s, 80s, 90s... there would be even less chance of tracing the cars, so if a trainee was installing a locknut upside down on a random day in 1993, they'd have to wait until the part fell off. Whether or not it caused a dangerous cascade failure, or was benign in the city and lethal on the highway. So they're expecting programmers to check for sensor conditions that indicate part fell off or is loose so they can put up the "STOP ASAP" type messages and disable the vehicle before anything really nasty happens.

🍿

Tariffs you say?
Ford was granted billions in tax right offs by the government. Appears the public forgot about this. So what loss is there exactly except for a lot of labor and parts...as previously stated the QA on parts is non-existent.
