If our precious Maverick were stolen, would "Ford Pass" Location Tracking help find it?
Or should I keep the i-Phone Tag in it?
How does Ford Pass Tracking work?

1. Obviously Ford Pass gets a "location" update via my home Wi-Fi when I pull it into the garage.
2. It also keeps a "last" location update via my phone, when I move away from the truck with my phone.

But the question is; how does the location map update, (if at all), when option 1 and 2 are not available?
Does Ford Pass get updates from random passing Cell phones, similar to I-Phone Tags?
Does it use Satellite frequencies, similar to the Sirius Radio?
Does it use Cell frequencies, as you pass by a cell tower?

Thanks for the help.

It uses the built in modem/Cell phone SIM Card/Communication module to report GPS location via connecting to cell towers.

This is 100% separate/independent from if you subscribe to Sirius Radio, or any other paid service. Ford will still get your location without any action (or $$ spent) on your part, other than refraining from pulling the fuse/killing the hardware.

All that being said, they (Ford) disclaimer it to say that it is not intended for tracking stolen vehicles. But it works.....just like any other GPS tracker would.

Thank you paneubert, great insight.
I will have to try driving around with my cell phone off, and see if it communicates back to Ford Pass.
Thanks again.

It will. It is not dependent on your phone. I tracked mine when it was picked up from work to have the spray in liner done.

It has nothing to do with your cell phone. If you have enabled the modem built into your truck or if you have connected your phone and used android auto or iPhone mirroring, you have given permission to them to track you. With no cell phone on or in the car it has a built-in cellular communications equipment using a proprietary network most likely AT&T and it will report your location whether you want it to or not. Remember they want your data and knowing where you are is part of your data signature.

Thanks GT500.
I relate to what you are saying about them tracking me, and that does concern me.
On the flip side, I do like the idea of having help to track my Mav, in case it is stolen, but maybe it is better that I stick with the Apple I-tag?

I'm not sure if I have activated the Modem yet? I have only used the basic radio options and "Car Play" via my Cell phone. I will look into that . Thanks again.

Modem is on from the factory probably, you can turn off some of the tracking in the menus but not 100%. There would need to be a hardware wire cut or whatever to truly turn it off.

Can't you just pull fuse 11 to disable all the telematics?

You've linked your vehicle to Ford Pass. That's consenting to the terms of Ford collecting (and reselling) your telemetry data.

Several years ago there was a guy that for some reason killed 3-4 people in DFW area and within 2-3 hours was arrested by local law enforcement in Oklahoma motel based on the location of his vehicle.

Mine says my truck is parked at my neighbor's address. I sure hope my garage isn't actually on his property. 😬
Looks like Ford is using gps to lesser decimal precision than what military targeting does. My house is google mapped about 800 feet north of my driveway.

I thought that turning off connectivity in the FordPass Connect would disable tracking but I guess I should have known better?
