Ah yes, the Ford lightning EV wave of the future. 😁
Ford takes $19.5 Billion dollar charge to write down EV investments😭

Because the recent Lightning was so successful.

.
To be fair, this new platform is all about smaller, and more affordable EVs. That's a use case where EVs are stellar, as compared to something like a lightning that's asked to tow a massive trailer. Not to mention we've seen demand for affordable EVs is pretty darn significant on a global scale.

There's clearly a lot of demand for EVs around the world, we see in places like China, or throughout much of Europe, EV adoption trending upwards. It's important to look at where the industry is going, and that's hybrids and EVs. That doesn't mean everyone wants an EV right now, it just means demand for EVs, especially on the lower end, is growing rapidly.

Ford ignoring that would be a mistake.

The Lightning walked so the Ranchero could run.

The Lightning screwed up by charging obscene prices for way too short of a range when actually using the thing as a truck. But it also demonstrated why strapping batteries to an ICE platform is generally a compromise. A dedicated EV platform isnt going to have those same issues.

But in the regulatory environment at the time, with EV mandates on the table and far stricter emission regs mandating significant EV sales, the Lightning made perfect sense.
One thing to keep in mind is that Ford isn't trying to sell this to anyone on this forum. They're gonna keep selling the Maverick, and the spy guys at AutoForecast say a Maverick redo is just three years away.

Ford even said recently, and I paraphrase poorly, "it's not really meant to be a truck". They make a big deal that it has more interior space than a RAV4. And that makes me think "suburban mom". I pulled that out of thin air, but there it is. I suspect Ford might be chasing the crowd that bought the discontinued Escape with this vehicle.
But suburban moms dont want truck beds. Neither do Escape buyers....or they would have bought the Mav instead.

The above is absolutely correct.
I asked my if she had to get rid of her Escape, would want a Maverick.
She said, absolutely not.
I asked, how about a car she said nope. She wants another SUV like her Escape. And she's long past the soccer mom age.

The Lightning being based off the ICE model made more sense than the unibody GM EV trucks. At least the Lightning kept the full real truck functionality and all the aftermarket accessories still fit.
