I suppose someday when I don't have the strength in the fingers I used to open the latch to also dampen the opening of the tailgate, I'll consider one of these. Or, I will just lay the pizza box on the tonneau and open it with my free hand. My wife has always driven pickups and Broncos with tailgates, and she doesn't feel the need for one either. It's not a big deal to us, but I understand why some people might want one. I prefer the flush stock tailgate tiedowns to any of the aftermarket options I've seen as well, and I frequently use them.

The best argument I've seen for one of these is from @OleFordGuy , the worry of children pulling the tailgate latch and injuring themselves. In my case, there are rarely unsupervised children around my vehicles and I tend to have it locked when I'm not in it.

That used to be true, but today these shocks are standard on upper trim levels of nearly every new truck.

It's a $20 upgrade that's easy to add and makes the truck that much more useful.

Trucks are built to be used.
Standard on upper trims probably paying 200 for that. Enough is never enough! Convenience is the mother of consumerism of consumables.

Having had a few full-size pickups with much heavier tailgates I was a bit surprised when I fist saw that a tailgate damper was available for the Maverick. It seems a bit 'reckless' to just let it slam down so I always let it down slowly but it's so light and easy to open/close, even with one hand, it would never cross my mind to install a damper.

Sure, it's maybe a little easier (quieter if you're a slammer) to let the damper lower it but if you make things too physically easy in your life you will definitely get weaker and weaker, thus more easily injured. We will all get there if we live long enough anyway but I'm in no hurry to speed it along. I had to start working out in my 60s because I felt myself shrinking. In my 70s I still work out, rotate my own tires, do oil changes, brake jobs, etc, not to save money - partly so I can inspect under the truck but mainly for the exercise. Every little bit helps to slow the decline, simple as that.

If you have the ability to physically pull the tailgate handle, you also have that arm free to guide the tailgate down.
What's the endgame here? Would you like the people with "physical ability" to admit they are lazy? Maybe to say they are impatient and in a hurry? Maybe they just like spending money on stupid stuff?

"Back in my day, we didn't need cruise control, because we had strong ankle muscles"
"When I was growing up, we had wrist strength and were taught to roll down the crank windows."
"No one should need more power/bigger tires/tinted windows/blah blah blah blah."

I swear, if we deleted all the "I can't see why anyone needs that" comments on this forum, activity would drop 50% around here. 🤷‍♂️

You see that as a 'problem'?
I don't see deleting posts that exclaim "someone else's solution won't work for me" as a problem, no.

It's just that I'm worried I am going to bump against the limits on the "ignore" list. :D

Yeah, and if we didn't have those maybe we could make room for more important topics like oil change interval arguments, easily-scratched plastic, auto-locking driver doors and rotary shift knobs.

;)

Are there different brands available, and how does the quality compare
Yes.
More than likely. Just a few manufacturers in china, sold under different names. Usually more money, better warranty.
Same damper with a brand name sticker = more $$$

Seems like a good idea. I can say I have opened the tail gate many times and never noticed. I think, though, I have always just lowered it with my hand. This idea is not bad for 25-30 bucks. As for the part of kids getting hurt, the tailgate is locked as my truck is always locked so there would be no kids near it unless I open it. And I have no kids that small so it would be someone else's kids and then I would say get the hell away from my truck.. 😂.

But I still like it! Nice idea for a reasonable price.

You needed to make a video about this? Doesn't everyone know about these?
My issue with OP is that he has by and large only created threads (14) to push his YouTube content and has only 21 total comments (which includes those threads).

OP isn’t contributing to the created threads or being an active MTC member - it’s all for personal gain.

There have been plenty of members with channels - @pa-outdoorsman and @Shay are two that come to mind - who refer back to their content but are extremely active on MTC.

But to only use the forums to promote your channel and nothing else doesn’t rub me the right way.
