Ok, don't make fun. I'm not a car guy, anything but. But I'm skeptical of sales people in car dealerships and I know that extended warranty plans have the reputation of being the ultimate sucker bet. I picked up my hybrid Maverick the other night at the dealer (ordered it 7/12/21). A slick talking sales guy, different from my normal sales guy, sat down across from me with extended service plan brochures. I was ready to take delivery and drive home, at this point. I'd been at the dealership for a couple hours already. I rolled my eyes when he started his fast talking but, before long, he had me thinking that maybe getting the plan was worth considering. He quoted me for a 72 month plan with a price that came to $130/month for 48 months (financed at 0.9%). I said "no" and he came back and said he could do the plan for $95/month. That makes the total price $4,740 including the finance charge of 0.9%. The plan covered everything that the 3 year/36,000 warranty covers plus oil change/tire rotate, brake pads/rotors, engine battery for a 7th year (battery is warrantied for 6 years), and all scheduled maintenance with no exceptions. A couple perks like free loaner cars from the dealer, tire/wheel replacement if one of them get blown out, etc. Ultimately, I told him I would go home and crunch the numbers over the weekend and let him know if I wanted to do it. Is this, in fact, a sucker bet or is it worth considering? Thanks in advance!

Sucker bet, there is no such thing as an extended warranty covering everything the 3 year 36,000 covers. I purchased a Ford extended warranty but did so with Ziegler and I have a 8 year 125,000 warranty for a little over $1,500. They offer no interest monthly plan for 12 months too. So, I would walk on that dealer warranty. My dealer did the same thing to me and the guy actually got mad because I turned him down. He was disgusted with me. OH well! LOL

I have a related question. The price you were quoted is similar to what they told me. I have seen posts mentioning that you can get the same coverage for a drastically reduced price...as in $2,500 difference. My specific questions are:

1. How can you tell if they are really Ford ESP?

2. Anyone willing to share their experience in a post or direct message?

I didn't want to post my question because I knew I would feel like an idiot for even asking! Well, I'd rather feel like an idiot than act like an idiot, I guess. Maybe I should go back and tell him that I'll do 8 years for $1500 like you got. BTW, I've got the Ford brochure I'll get it out when I'm home. Almost sure that it covers the same as the 3yr/36K warranty. Thanks for your input!

Oh, you mean they may be selling me a "Ford" plan but it is, in fact, a plan sold by another company?

Well that was the case with my dealer it wasn't even FORD ESP it was some other company. If you go to these dealers that sell these FORD ESP plans. (Zeigler) They have a comparison and tell you exactly what they cover. https://www.zeiglerfordesp.com/warranty_plans/?plan_id=2141

When you purchase it you will get your plan coverage sheet mailed to you and/or you can download a copy. But it is indeed FORD ESP.

I think it was a great question. I would imagine more people wished they had asked rather than getting ripped off.

I did add the headlight replacement warranty, because these LED assemblies which they have to replace the whole thing as they are not user serviceable. I've read they can be as much as $1,400.

There is a difference between the extended warranty and the maintenance plan. If it covers all oil changes and maintenance, it's a maintenance plan. This is the reason for the drastic price difference.

Now with that said, it's still not worth it. The amount you will spend getting your service done at the dealership is way less than they want for the service plan.

If you really want an extended warranty from Ford, Flood Ford and a few others will beat most any local dealers price and it is a certified Ford warranty that is nationwide and covered at any Ford dealer. I personally don't believe these are worth it but each to there own. If you decide you want the piece of mind of an extended warranty, just make sure you search online and get the best price.

One last thing, all Ford extended warranties are the same price for the 12 months. Then after that usually only about $100 more up until the factory 3/36 warranty expires. So you don't have to decide right now.

Just my 2 cents

My husband got both the extended warranty & maintenance plan, I am on the fence on both. We were told the corporate level X-plan limited the pricing on both, one was $1500 the other $2k i believe (I would have to print the paprwk). He is someone who refuses to take care of things, he is an honors BS & MS Mechanical Engr he KNOWS better he just doesn't care. He has an almost animosity towards vehicles, though he is happy w his Mav and was w his F-150 for years.

One reason I didn't fight these plans was the fact since he is already paying for a plan, he may be more inclined to utilize it. Another was the possibility of a myriad of things breaking on a new model vehicle especially past the first couple years. The only time I have ever bought an extended warranty was a 1 yr old Jeep Grand Cherokee and as soon as the regular warranty ran out I used the extended and basically covered my costs in the next 2 yrs.

Not uncommon for dealers to sell service and/or warranty plans at 200% above cost. Here in Florida, law requires dealers to sell these plans at a fixed price to everyone (although you can negotiate the selling price to offset). Check out YouTube YAA as they sell these policies at $500 above cost. Most warranty plans are in the $1500-$2000 range which is about 1/2 of dealers. But check to make sure your State will recognize an out of state plan. Florida will only recognize ESP vendors that are registered or have a presence here to allow business. Seen cases of plans being sold out of state, but not honored when a claim is made, knowing this loophole exists in Florida. Be careful.

Do you know what happens when an out by of state car has a warranty issue and needs service in FL?

I don't normally endorse extended warranty ESP's, but on any Chrysler (whatever they call it now) product it probably is a very safe bet for sure. Ask Scotty Kilmer (YouTube) about Chrysler reliability. Anytime you rely on MB, coupled with Fiat, reliability goes out the window.
