I can't even begin to guess how much warehouse space would be needed to stock every part for EVERY car 10 to 20, 30, 40 + years old.

Wait... i just had a brain fart.
We DO HAVE acres and acres of warehouses full of parts + I really do enjoy digging around in them.o_O
agreed, I rebuilt a 1997 chevy 1500 that got its front ripped off from 3 junk yard donors. But that was during 'cash for clunkers' and had a lot of trucks in the lot(remember the black goop that was used to destroy the engines?) But good for all body parts. but typically, most trucks get stripped within days of arriving at a junk yard so I rarely go look anymore. Plus, I guess I am just getting too old to spend days under a car. with a jack perched on a board on the grass. (97 still runs great-it will outlive me)

I was going to say Rock Auto (looks like you found that out), heck they have parts for 80's Escorts, when is the last time you saw one of those on the road?
hah! I bought an 83 with 600 miles on it - rebuilt. now that was basic transportation! (4sp manual, no air). Long recycled I'm sure

Was told that will make parts for 10 years, and maybe after that if demand for the part. If you plan on owning longer than 10 years, may be an issue for you. Thought you should have all the facts as well.
I believe it's required by law that vehicles have to be supported by OEMs for 10 years. After that, it's no guarantee.

If you have a popular vehicle then OEMs might go further. But what tends to happen more often is that the part that you need just happens to be used in a car that is still supported and is therefore still available at a dealer's parts counter.

People rag on auto manufacturers for parts-binning shortcuts in design, but I for one don't mind if items are parts-binned. Makes finding replacements easy and cheap, especially for high-wear/high-touch items like the turn signal stalk (well, unless you have a BMW).

As others have stated, after 10 years, the "aftermarket" may still have the parts around. I say "aftermarket" because chances are, the aftermarket companies are the OEM suppliers, just they are selling the same part directly, without a Ford-branded package and part number.

Sales of the Mav will climb into the ionosphere. I suspect parts will be available for decades.
I can still find just about anything for my Pinto.

So you're telling me my 20-year-old Ford ranger is probably screwed if anything happens

Not to be nit picking, but I believe the dealers only have to supply you with the part while it is under warranty. And that doesn't even mean they have to make it, just provide it. It can be aftermarket at that point.

Even if that's true, it doesn't mean you're SOL if the car is out of warranty. Chances are the part you need is still being used in other vehicles that are still supported and/or the automakers have new old stock lying around.

And that doesn't even mean they have to make it, just provide it. It can be aftermarket at that point.
I can't speak for all dealerships, but the dealership that I worked at had to supply OEM parts only for warranty repairs. It was in their franchise agreement with the auto maker.

Out-of-warranty (customer pay) repairs also had to be done with OEM parts except for very specific items. Those include tires, bulbs...and I think that's it. We even had to use OEM bolts and OEM sealants and OEM brake cleaner lol.

The exception to that is the aftermarket branch of the store. That's the branch where you can get lift kits, lowering kits, wheels, etc. But they had to clearly brand it as a dealership brand and not a manufacturer brand so as to not confuse customers into thinking that those products are OEM or OEM-endorsed.

ok, all - appreciate your comments on warranty and explorer common parts and so on. Lets assume that I have been rebuilding / repairing for 40 years and own cars until they die (record is 680,000 diesel 85 jetta) . The reason for my post is this:

1. lot of LOYAL ford owners with these trucks (take care of your base)
2. Ford cancelled the part, but demand is so high that none were available aftermarket either. This is too early for a junkyard repair only vehicle
3. if an automaker truly will only provide parts to only what they are legally required, then Ford does not consider me or any 2nd;3rd owner in their demographic, - not a fit for me and I should buy elsewhere. This is a wear-out item and should have coverage. Failure to understand and ensure coverage indicates a blind spot or lack of customer focus.

one reader actually found a part for me on Rockauto, a site that had not popped up on my lists - Sooo appreciated that.

Yes, At the time I wrote this post, very frustrated, but prob more of an issue with supply chain constraints than market forces (ie; may be cancelling older parts to free up capacity for new parts). Just something frustrating of getting the message that part is CANCELLED vs. out of stock.
But - part is on, truck is FIXED.

I have a 2007 sport trac that my son is driving and ordered a maverick as I liked the platform. However, was told that I can not get a turn signal switch as Ford cancelled that part. Whaaaat?!? I have owned a lot of older vehicles and have never run into this. Just chatted with Ford Parts help was told the part was obsoleted. Was told that will make parts for 10 years, and maybe after that if demand for the part. If you plan on owning longer than 10 years, may be an issue for you. Thought you should have all the facts as well.

UPdate - pays to vent I guess! a member found the part at rock auto so that works! Not sure why rock auto didnt come up on any search for part number or part description, but book marked for future use.
I owned a 2002 Ford Thunderbird With lots of problems. First, Parts for a 2002 are different then the 2003-2005 Tbirds. Second, the retro Thunderbirds have Jaguar engines, not Ford, so thats a problem right there. Ford stopped suppling parts in 2012, thats 10 years ago and no recyclers have anything for them. People who stocked up on parts know what they have, and are not friendly. I lost thousands when I sold it for $6500 last year. No more owning a car more then 7 years.
