Got mom a first gen. Focus in 98- we have now had three of them and she is still driving one (barely…not much left of it now). Never had a single problem with it and drove it into the ground.

So I worked at Ford for long time and GM before that. Owned numerous vehicles while an employee of both companies.

I have never purchased a first year model of anything. Kinda interesting reading all the excitement.

How many others are making the Maverick their first model year purchase?
1st year models aren't what they used to be they're better As most are built off of proven platforms

This would be my first time buying the first MY, not that I'm worried about it. I will break down my logic and see if anyone else can refute it.

1. The body is the same core as the Escape and Bronco Sport with over 19 million test miles.
2. The Maverick, in large, is a parts bin truck which have been tested and validated for years/decades. You can buy many of the components, and various 3rd party alternatives, commercial of the shelf (COTS) that plug/bolt right up.
3. Consumer reports shows a history of first model year vehicles being just as reliable as the following years. Small annoyances with pieces/functions or missing features are what ruffle peoples feathers.
3b. Even though there may be MAJOR engine/transmission issues in the first year they likely won't be found before year two/three. Look at the CMAX CVT issue that lasted for 3 years before they found the bearing was bad.
3c. Each subsequent year could have new parts, suppliers, workers, robots, you name it and could have any number of new issues introduced.
4. The warranty typically solves most issues and a heavily recalled vehicle just means, to me, that they are at least stepping up and getting the issues fixed. I had to wait for 5 years and 12 broken burnt our headlights on my Prius for them to finally do a safety recall. Found out they would have refunded my headlights too but I didn't save the receipts (learn from my mistake).
5. We are all on a chat forum that will complain about EVERYTHING, so any possible issue will quickly have a solution.
6. Don't set you expectations to zero defects in the first year and be open to a few hours at the dealer. Be nice to them and they should take care of you.

I bought the first year 2005 Ford Mustang built Aug '04 and took delivery day before Thanksgiving '04. Only problem and they had a recall for it was when the gas tank was being filled the gas nozzle was shutting off constantly. Recall replacement gas tank was replaced. Big wait on Mustang GT that year. They had problems supplying rearend assemblies that delayed production.

The platform has been around for two model years.

I got my 15 Mustang GT in Sept of 15. Had no issues with it.

I bought the Scion tC on release year, I was pretty excited and it delivered completely. Super fun little car for a teenager with a pretty solid sound system, looked pretty cool. Chicks loved it.

First time buying a first year but also a new vehicle period. It fits all my needs and I can’t afford to wait 2-3 years to get a vehicle for my situation however. It was this or pay out the nose for a base model no optioned 2wd new Tacoma.

Bought a 2015 Mustang Ecoboost. 1st year of the 2.3 EB in the current s550. Bought 2015 Mustang GT (2nd gen Coyote) and a 2018 Mustang GT with the 3rd gen Coyote PI/DI and all 3 Mustangs no issues.

I’m not worried about the 2022 Maverick Hybrid. It has a great drivetrain warranty.

I just realized my current car - a mazda 3 - was a first model year at least for a redesign. They did rework the drive train so it was kind of a big deal. It's been rock solid, knock wood.

It's reasonable to be wary of a brand new vehicle and normally this would be a no-no for me, but virtually all the mechanical components are off the shelf, tried and true so it doesn't seem like a big deal. It's really just a body rework. Hopefully there won't be any weird issues like unibody weak points or something.

If we were talking about medications, my rule is never in the first 5 years on the market. I had samples of a new non narcotic painkiller that ended up being pulled from the market for killing a bunch of people.

Glad I never took that, but I can't wait to take the maverick for a spin.

Bought a new 1993 Ranger (1st year of 2nd generation) and new 2006 Ranger (3rd generation, 3rd facelift). Also bought a new 1997 Escort, which somebody else mentioned here was 1st year of "new" model?

My new Maverick will be 1st year of a totally new model offering and 1st built to order instead of buying stock off dealer lot.

Lot of nice reads about folks experiences of purchasing a new model year or running change. The first one is usually exciting.
Carry on:)

So looking forward to the Maverick.
