I have heard some 2025s and they sound like motorcycles, while not all older models did. Why does the engine sound so bad, or is it a cold start thing?

Probably a change in resonator depending on what earlier models you heard.
They did change at some point.

Mine is louder at start up. They got rid of the resonator and put in the screen type one welded onto the tailpipe. Quiets down when warm

Any way to alter it? Or will it always just sound kind of motorcycleish at startup?

You're gonna have to be more specific, lol. My V-4 Interceptor sounds waaayyyy better than my Maverick.

I mean, if you're talking about engine noise from the front of the truck - yes, the direct injection engines have a high pressure fuel system that sounds somewhere between a diesel and a sewing machine. That noise diminishes once it warms up, but IMHO these engines always sound somewhat unique.

If you mean the exhaust note - well, it *is* an inline-4 just like a lot of motorcycles, but also just like most compact cars. That sound is upgradeable via the aftermarket.

My '23 has the screen in the exhaust pipe, so not sure if/when anything changed there.

Not sure the effect if you covered the screen up. Its fine when warm but louder than my 23 was.

I wouldn't. It's functioning as a resonator, so it's going to reduce drone when cruising.

Will have to look into easy after market options.

I can attest to that. One of my former vehicles was a Toyota Tundra that had the 5.7L DOHC engine. Before I got it somebody had put on a SS Borla cat-back dual system on it. It sounded fantastic except at a specific RPM band that was about 200-300 RPM wide where it had a terribly annoying drone and that drone was right at a very decent highway speed when towing a trailer. Additional resonators in the system would have eliminated it.

I heard about a company that's making a sound system for EVs so there is some engine sound that coordinates w/ your use of the narrow peddle. Hmmm, maybe I could make my Lariat hybrid sound like a Mustang 5.0!
