This won't cover the situations in which you need it.

This is necessary when the battery in the fob is dead (and perhaps other fob failure cases, idk).

If it's dead, it won't be detectable inside the cab to let you shift out of park!

hmm, I haven't checked and don't remember: does the app or display warn you that the battery in the fob is going low? I presume so, but . . .
Actually noticed that PID last night looking for something else - truck can flag the remote battery is low - I'd assume that means the truck could display that warning, and send it up to Ford - so alert could be sent to phone.

Kind of curious on non-push button start fob, can it do the same. I think I just swapped out that same sized battery from something else due to being too low.

Manual says it does.

I was thinking of adding the locking safe/vault to the center console. But that would block access to the key slot at the bottom of the console. Is the only solution to cut an access hole in the bottom of the vault?

The vault from Ford does not have a bottom.

Thanks. Because of Ford’s price I was looking at alternatives. But after your reply I dug a little deeper into the vault offered by Ford. It does have a bottom , but there is a cutout for the fob access. Guess I’ll have to recalculate to decide if I really need it at the price. Thanks again.

For a 2025 Ford Maverick with a push-button start,
the backup key fob slot is located in the bottom of the center console storage compartment. This is a fail-safe feature designed to allow you to start your vehicle if the battery in your key fob dies.

How to use the backup key fob slot
  1. Open the center console and remove the rubber mat or cover from the bottom of the compartment.
  2. Locate the slot, which is a recess or outline specifically designed to hold the key fob.
  3. Place your key fob into the slot.
  4. With your foot on the brake, press the engine Start/Stop button as you normally would. The vehicle's system will then read the fob's chip and start the engine
This is a great post. A good friend of mine got stuck today for three hours when his key fob battery went dead in a two year old VW. Luckily he got help from a Good Samaritan who took him to Autozone to have the battery replaced. I also ran into the same problem two weeks ago with my wife's two year old Audi. Her fob and the spare both went dead within several weeks of each other. Luckily I had a spare battery for replacement. I don't recall the Audi has a similar emergency slot; after reading this, it will be sussed out. Thanks again for this post!

Before I knew about the RFID workaround, I always made sure to have a spare CR2032 battery in my door pocket.

This is a followup post that may benefit all. I used "AI" to find a solution for starting the truck when the battery dies. Using Copilot the answer came right up with reference to the dwinch53 post. I've been using copilot for two years researching a wide range of subjects involving health issues, investing, taxes and many more. The results are all incredible for time to get answers along with the references.
To use copilot, simply type the word into a web browser and ask questions in the screen that comes up. It's free.
Best to all and happy New Year!
And thanks to contributors for the great information this site provides.
