It can be a WTF moment when you discover the parking brake has been applied unintentionally. However, a button push and you’re on your way. Technology I guess.
Yea I guess I need to get into the habit of hitting the parking brake after I turn off the auto start/stop button. It just annoys me that it applies automatically. I have no problem using it just the auto apply

Auto application was born of so many people not using the Parking Brake when parking, instead referring to it as a "Emergency Brake". Even putting a (P) on the button people still call it the "emergency brake" and dont use it, for whatever bizarre reason.

My sister lives in Florida, which is flat as a pancake. She didn't even know her Toyota had a parking brake until I drove the car one day and asked where is it.

People in northern climates got into the habit of not using the parking brakes because old cable operated parking brakes had the risk of freezing in cold weather and not releasing. Old habits died hard...

With Ford’s history of transmissions jumping out of park, it’s clear why they have the parking brake engaged automatically.

here's what I found does this look right

AI Overview

The 2026 Ford Maverick AWD Hybrid Lariat uses an electric parking brake (EPB) instead of a traditional manual handbrake or foot pedal.

How to Engage the Parking Brake (Standard Parking)
To protect the transmission's parking pawl—and to follow best practices for hybrid models—use this step-by-step sequence:
YouTube·Long McArthur +1

    • Keep your foot pressed on the main brake pedal.
    • Shift the transmission into Neutral (N).
    • Pull up on the EPB switch (located on the center console or lower left instrument panel).
    • Wait until the red "parking brake on" indicator light becomes solid on your instrument cluster.
    • Shift into Park (P) and release your foot from the main brake pedal.

How to Release the Parking Brake
    • Automatic Release: Get in, close the driver’s door, fasten your seatbelt, start the vehicle, shift into gear, and press the accelerator pedal; the brake releases automatically.
    • Manual Release: Turn the ignition on, press and hold the main foot brake pedal, and push the EPB switch down.
      YouTube·Long McArthur +1

Using It in an Emergency (Dynamic Braking)
If your primary foot brake fails while driving, you can use the electronic parking brake to slow or stop the vehicle:

    • Pull up and hold the parking brake switch continuously while the vehicle is moving. The system will apply controlled braking to stop the truck. (Note: Activating it while driving above 4 mph will sound a warning chime and illuminate the brake system warning lamp.)

I am one of them and when I started living in the South, I then had the problem of the system ceasing up from lack of use. Been living in the South now over 45 years. Today, I use my parking brake regularly, but not 100 percent of the time.

My 26 Tremor,
I let the tail gate down and load the hell outta the truck.
Piled high with crap, all kinds, donations, dead body bags of clothes, tv’s what ever,
Shit hanging off the tailgate.

Here’s a pic of me doing my thing with my 2024 :
Ford Maverick Emergency brake self applying IMG_2446

But in my Tremor, when I back up it feels like I hit an elephant or a whale.
It’s a soft sudden stop. That’s emergency braking.
On the 24 it never did this,
On the 26, every time.
Friggen camera on the tailgate is looking down.

Once it stops me I can continue backing up but must remember to hold my speed under 2 mph
Or it will stop me again
No biggie. Just another quirk.

Hey boyz, whatcha think ?
Should I get one of those garbage truck back up alarms?
Beep Beep Beep Beep, Roflmao !

Go into the drivers assistance settings and turn off the reverse helpers. I keep the beeping and only turn off the braking but you can have it any way you like

When would you not power the vehicle on with the selector in park?
Possibly that's a typo and it should say "power your vehicle off", not "on".

Just speculating, but I bet Ford got sued somewhere along the line in the past because some driver didn't put the e-brake on when he or she should have, and got injured, or worse.
