I am about to do my first oil change, and overthinking what to put in. Recommended is 5W-30 but an alternative is 0W-30 in cold climates like mine, where the temp can go below -20. The chart shows 0W-30 can be used in any temperature, I am wondering why it isn't the default recommended oil. I am suspecting it is to protect the turbo in hot operating conditions?

You should go with 0w30 as we approach colder weather, since you live close to the artic circle. In the springtime, switch back to 5w30 as recommended. I live way closer to the Tropic of Capricorn so I have no need to use a lighter oil.

If you are curious, it mostly has to do with the pump-ability of the oil when you first start the engine, when everything is cold soaked. Thick oil doesn’t pump as well as thin oil. But it does add a little more cushion than thin oil once it makes it to a wear part….like main bearings and turbo bearings. When the engine is at operating temperature, both oils are going to be performing the same.

Don’t overthink it.
You live at basically the North Pole. Use the thinner oil for winter, since you are what, a week away from everything being frozen anyway?
If you drive South to Panama, stop in South Texas to get the oil changed back to 5w 30.

Yeah, I am definitely running the thin stuff this winter since we are neighbors with Santa, wondering if there is a reason to switch back to 5W-30 unless I come to visit you? Last time I was in Texas the coolest high temperature we saw was 104!

I don't know where you get your information. Could you please post a citation. Because this is truly untrue about viscosity at operating temperature. Here is the technical specifications from mobile of mobile one oil. At operating temperature 100cst 212 fahrenheit. Zero thirty has a better pump ability at minus thirty. But has an higher viscosity at operating temperature two hundred and twelve degrees. Unless Mobile one is falsifying their data. It States that the zero thirty is over 13 percent thicker at 212 degrees.

No need to switch back to summer weight oil until the daytime temps get back to at least the 50’s. Both weights will work fine around that point but slightly thicker is better in hotter conditions.
I’m guessing that Santa uses really light oil like 0w 20 on the sleigh while the devil down in Georgia probably uses 20w 50 racing oil in his rig while he’s driving around looking for another fiddle contest to play at.

My aircraft uses straight 50w oil and outside air temps can go from 100deg f. to neg 1deg f. during a single flight. A rebuilt engine for it runs about $78k and I don’t worry about switching oils based on the temperature extremes. Keeping oil clean is a much more important thing.

Minnesota, Santa’s neighbour! Have you people ever heard of Northern British Columbia, Alaska? 🥶 Santa goes to Minnesota to Vacation! 😉

I don't understand the thought process.Unless mobile one is falsified the thickness of their oil on their website. To use a thiner oil in heat. When it clearly shows the zero thirty at two hundred and twelve degrees fahrenheit is thicker. Or is it just lack of reading comprehension and misunderstanding of the cst#

As you can see, everytime this question comes up, the debate and arguing come with it.
Not sure how aircraft piston engines enters as comparable though.....lol

Just stick with the recommended for the temperature range in your area.

On aircraft oil, it prob has higher anti-wear additive than vehicle oils. Word out there is refineries reduced antiwear additive levels to keep CAT happy. To a degree affects viscosity. All my samples show low viscosity. And shear. Blend or full synthetic.

Hey tell your neighbor Santa Claus to stop by my house last.
I’ll cook him up a great venison steak.

Go find the rat540 forum on oil.
5w30 Full Synthetic would be the lowest weight oil I would use. My 2020 Ford Transit Connect non ecoboost 2.0l has 105,000mi and the last 30,000mi has averaged over 30.0mpg. 30,000mi ago I switched from 5w20 full Syn to 5w30 full synthetic. My new Maverick Hybrid now has 5w30 full synthetic in it.

Why isn’t 0W30 the default? Because 90% of Maverick owners live in places that have hot summer climates and only 10% of them live in places with Arctic winter temperatures.

There is a lengthy similar discussion over on the Bronco forum, lots of oil analysis data, and oil geeks in the discussion.

Based on that information, I have switched over to Mobile 1 ESP (Euro-spec) 0w-30 for both my Maverick & Bronco. Oil analysis has shown it holds viscosity longer/better than other synthetic 0/5w - 20/30/40 oils.

It's also worth noting, the 0/5w designation has no relation to the 20/30/40 etc.., as one is cold flowability, and the other is N.O.T. viscosity.

Bottom line, the 0w -30 ESP tested out better than any other similar priced synthetic 0/5w-20/30/40 that anyone could provide.

This is not a recommendation, just an FYI....

Does MB1 ESP meet WSS-M2C961-A1?
