I have an AWD XL with the 4k tow. It has a manual locking tailgate. Much to the annoyance of a friends 5 year old who likes to climb into the bed.

To confirm, you have to manually lock the XL tailgate when you shut it? I kind of assumed that the key was only needed to open it.

You have to use the key to lock or unlock the XL tailgate. It does not self lock when closed.

XLT w Lux package here and it locks electronically on mine.

The keypad, and the power locking tailgate were 2 of my main reasons to choose the XLT over the XL package. Too handy to be able to unlock your car without your keys (or phone) and the tailgate locking/unlocking without thinking about it.

XL requires a key, but I rarely ever open it, so no big deal.

You can add it yourself, there is a long thread on the forum about using a lock unit from a Ranger:
