First model years are always the most problematic, and the powertrain on the Santa Cruz is all new, both the engine and transmission.

Maverick powertrains are pretty ancient, with exception of the 8-speed transmission in the turbo, which I believe is a couple years old now. But even with the hybrid powertrain which has been used for a long time now by Ford, there are weird software glitches too like people burning up their cats when letting them idle in very cold environments.

I'd wager 2023 will be more reliable for both.

One good thing with the Hyundai is if you do have powertrain issues, at least you have a decade full warranty to cover those. Bad thing is I hear the Hyundai doesn't even universally provide loaners, you have to get a loaner yourself and then contact Hyundai to reimburse you.
A wise old sage of a mechanic once told me longer warranties are offered because THEY NEED TO as a pre-emptive CYA for expected complaints on quality and reliability. Marketing department spin for trying to turn a negative reputation into a value adder for buying and owning certain vehicles. Can't say for sure, but Yugo may have pioneered this gimmick in the USA.

A wise old guru at a temple at the peak of the Himalaya once told me that products are made just good enough not to fail in too high of number until the warranty has just expired.

TFL just had their long term Santa Cruz delivered yesterday. It will be in there possession for about a year, these guys will test the crap out of it.
I am looking forward to it.

I have been visiting both this and the SC forum.
I had developed a real liking for much about the SC. I like the push bottom dampened tailgate, the bumper steps, the “brink” under the bed...I could go on.
BUT there are multiple threads about the SC simply freezing up and either stopping entirely or going into limp mode.
I mean multiple threads each with with multiple owners.
Only one poster received a definite diagnosis from a dealership (bad fuel pump) but most have gotten the “we don’t know what it is”
Then there’s the DCT. One guys trans blew up on the way home from the dealer. Another found out he can’t get his truck because the DCT gave out while being driven onto the truck carrier.
UGH.
I know Ford is problematic but I have owned many vehicles over the past 50 years and never had one just give out for no known reason.
I think I will order a Lariat hybrid in August and pray...if I don’t just decide to keep my 2006 Ranger till it rots away!
Why not? I'm still driving my 1997 Ford Ranger, amazing truck. Just bad gas mpg & no crew cab, just tiny jump seats. And I wanted AWD.

Built In Obsolescence. Brilliant plan to sell more parts and service ;) At least before internet and lots of quality focused competition raising the bar.

Yeah, and even if its not intentional, I'd like to see 10 year warranties as standard in the automotive industry because of the positive culture change I think it would have with the manufacturers.

For example, if anyone remembers the old last generation 3.5L ecoboost, they put a plastic waterpump in the middle INSIDE the engine. Most people know that water pumps are one of the more common points of failure on an engine, especially if its plastic, and people usually notice something is wrong when they see it leaking a bit and you just bolt a new one on and put on a fresh belt, voila. Did that myself on the Ram. Yet here they have it inside the engine so when it leaks the owner may not even notice, and when it fails it grenades the engine with coolant leaking internally, and either way requires partial disassembly of the engine to get to it to replace.

If Ford had a 10 year 100K mile powertrain warranty in place for some time, an engineer at Ford probably would have raised his hand and said, "hey guys, these internal plastic water pumps are going to cost us a FORTUNE", but since water pumps rarely fail in only the first 5 years 60K miles its a non-issue as far as the manufacturer's bottom-line is concerned.

I remember back years ago when Hyundai introduced the EXCEL in the USA, Its was 1986. Total piece of crap, super cheap and were gone from the road very quickly. They have come a long way to flood the US Market with their cars. Even though they look nice, I would not by a Hyundai strictly based on longevity and resale value. Good Luck.
Yup and I had one of those pieces of shit I remember I was going to get some weed and just as I passed under an off ramp 2 exits a way from getting my sticky icky I hear a pop bang ziiinngzinng and knew I blew a rod that is the best and only way that piece of crap car should go because it seems like a rather painful death in car terms.

So I have had a number of Fords. First one was my parents '50 Custom in Pea Soup Green. It ran until my brother "fixed" the heads. After that it got totaled in Big Cottonwood canyon taking my brother skiing in a blizzard. I had a '56 Fairlane "Skyliner" that had a police 312 in it and was converted to a manual trans with a hurst floor shift. Then I had a 69 Torino Boss 351. Then a '73 Capri with a 2600 v6 (fast and light and pretty nimble), then a 76 Granada which got rolled coming down Parley's and hit a rock that had rolled onto the road. In that same time period I had Chevy's, Dodges, Austin-Healey, Porsche and an Audi. In 14 I got back into Ford with a Focus, traded that one in on an Escape and that for the Maverick. If I had kept all of the Fords I have had, I wouldn't have any room, but I would be pretty rich from the resale of a few of them. I saw Hemmings sell a clone of my 69 Torino for $200k

I had a 1967 Ford Econoline Supervan stretched model, the 1964 Ranchero in my Avatar, a 1973 Ranchero w/351, 4 Rangers, and a 1997 Escort, and currently our 2005 E-450 motorhome and 2018 F-150. I'm not in a super big hurry to receive my Maverick, but will wait out the 22/23 MY situation, and at the same time starting to monitor 2023 Ranger news. Either 1 would suit my needs and the Ranger may even be a better choice, but I need to see all the specs and pricing before seriously considering it. At this point not sure which 1 would actually arrive for purchase

I just would like to get an honest 4WD again with Warn or Atlas hubs and a four speed transfer case. I like to go into the desert, I am too old and slow to get into crawling but I like going out into the desert and camping. That is the reason I wanted the Maverick. I am just worried about how well it will handle sand and slick rock.

It was my SC that had the fuel pump replaced. No problems over the 300 miles or so I've driven since it was fixed. Haven't had any other issues within the first 8500 miles.

The Hyundai dealer didn't have any loaners when the fuel pump on my SC was replaced. They gave me a rental through Enterprise. They took care of all of the expense.

Like we all didn't already know SC was inferior to Maverick in every way here?
That’s not accurate...they are different vehicles. One is car-like truck and one is truck-like car.
At least that’s what it seems like.
J.D. Power just dealer brands by customer service. Hyundai was one up from the bottom...just ahead of Chrysler.
Ford was middle of the pack.
Having said that, the worst dealer experience I’ve had was with the local Ford dealer and my first Ranger: they took my cash but never changed the vehicle title. At least not until I got the state police involved...

I'm super happy with my Santa Cruz SE FWD so much so that I released my Lariat Hybrid that will be here 3/23-27 back to the dealer yesterday
But of course the SE skips a lot of the tech and has a 2.5NA and 8 spd auto, no turbo or WDCT for me....
Iess tech means less problems. E.g. The Subaru Ascent (Their biggest car with high $$$) has lots of tech issues. But their little, simpler Crosstrek has great reliability.
