Disheartened With Santa Cruz Issues

If you spend time reading internet forums for any vehicle you will see a very, very exaggerated view of issues.

Like I never would have known that the Maverick had "serious defects" with...

1. tailgates not being level
2. "soft" glass
3. "cheap paint" that chips when rocks hit it
4. stupid windshield wipers that scrape paint off the hood when you scrape them against the hood
5. AM radio reception that is not as good as a 2003 Corolla
6. Flimsy grills that break when a rock hits them
7. transmissions that "make a little noise" when downshifting
8. wind noise, oh my the wind noise
9. no insulation inside front fenders or some shit
10. water vapor from exhaust when starting in cold weather

What else, I forget what else these imbeciles are whining about.

Early 1960s Japanese cars were hot garbage too. It takes time.

I remember back years ago when Hyundai introduced the EXCEL in the USA, Its was 1986. Total piece of crap, super cheap and were gone from the road very quickly. They have come a long way to flood the US Market with their cars. Even though they look nice, I would not by a Hyundai strictly based on longevity and resale value. Good Luck.

I work at a Bodyshop next door to Hyundai dealership and have gone thru a few SC and everyone of them have the same issue, 3 in total all with less than 4k miles. Issue that I found on all of them is on the inner door trim panel, the grab handle to pull the door shut all had the same peeling paint. Its like they painted them with Plasti-dip. I pretty much lost interest immediately.

Think the difference was the Japanese learned the Koreans didn't Hyundai's still have lots of issues with their powertrains. Just Google fire Hyundai and recall. Still going on with their fairly new vehicles.

That was literally 36 years ago. It's shocking how long a reputation can persist within the automobile industry. Hyundai has been ranked among the top handful of most reliable car brands in the world, and has been for a solid decade. I remember my uncle saying something similar a few years ago ("I'll never drive a Korean piece of crap") and now his sonata hybrid is his favorite car ever. My family has had better experience, regarding reliability, with Hyundai than any other car brand (including the reliability paragon Toyota); it's a shame the Santa Cruz is so hideous and just doesn't match up in many other ways with the Maverick.

Yep modern Hyundias are a far cry in quality from those Excels. I owned an 88 or 89 I think way back when and the engine gave out at around 80k. My old man bought it new and passed it on to me shortly after I got my drivers license. The car was a nonstop auto repair from the moment he passed it on to me.
