The magic of the Maverick Hybrid comes from completing an Indy 500 without refueling. 0-60 bah!
from this weekend, refilled in Rawlins WY on the way out, then drove home.. that included 120 miles of I-80 at 80mph..

Ford Maverick Deleted mpg rawlins

good trip, first time sleeping in the back, went well.. ha.

Ford Maverick Deleted maverick sunset

this is the 24 FWD which goes only 7 sec for the 0-60, still the fastest car I've owned in my fifty-odd (some very odd) years of driving

thank you for the link, better journalism than the C&D report.
it's shocking that Car & Driver doesn't know this -

"every component of the new HF55 hybrid transaxle (now used in all Maverick Hybrid versions) is uprated while continuing to fit within the same package size as its predecessor. Torque from the drive motor rises from 235 to 320 Newton-meters (173 to 236 pound-feet), while the generator’s power output goes from 78 to 96 kilowatts (105 to 129 horsepower)."

that would explain the performance improvements..

Right?!? You’d think Ford would want to trumpet those talking points to motor journalists.

It’s a big deal. In house design. Big increase in power while maintaining same footprint?

Changing one gear ratio is not as straightforward as you would think. The gears ratios in a eight-speed transmission or obtained by applying and releasing various clutches and combination to combine gears and create the design number of ratios. The following is a basic breakdown of how each gears chieve. Note that the a clutch is used in first through sixth gear. So making first gear a lower ratio would also change the ratios of 2 through 6. Eliminating second gear was simple because no components had to be changed. The only thing that was different was the fact that the F clutch is now only applied in 8th gear. When all eight speeds are used second gears created by the combination of the a clutch and F clutch . Second gear was easily eliminated because second and third gear ratios are very close. So it was almost unnecessary. It's not used anymore in the other applications such as the edge 1.5 either. I think the only reason it's used in the Maverick is because it may be useful in towing applications where the extra gear comes in handy. Another piece of trivia is that the 8 speed (8F) family of transmissions is primarily a GM design. GM has 9 ratios. But for eliminated a gear because it wasn't necessary. And after they used it in their vehicles they found that in most cases only seven ratios were necessary. In exchange for the front wheel drive 8-speed from GM, Ford supplies the 10 speed rear wheel drive to the GM for use in their trucks
Key Components & Their Function
A Clutch: Applies in 1st through 6th gears and holds the output sun gear shell from turning.
B Clutch: Applies in 4th, 6th, and Reverse gears.
C Clutch: Applies in 3rd and 7th gears.
E Clutch: Applies in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th gears.
F Clutch: Applies in 2nd and 8th gears.
Holy crap, it's THAT transmission.... it is legend... needs a metal name, like Slayer, or MegaDeth, for being the killer of a million Equinoxes.

I have one and I use it for delivery mostly in town. But when I jump on the highway it has great acc, plenty of room for more speed if I need it, lane changes and passing is easy. And the mileage is awesome at 11k I’m getting 43.5 overall.

The Maverick is also the fastest zero to sixty vehicle I’ve owned. And that includes my ‘70 Nova V8 driven way back in the day:)

Truth be told, it is actually a decent transmission in the Fords. There was some early issues in the first year models. But it's pretty good in the Bronco sport, Maverick, and escape after the first year. I remember being half scared to death when I did some work in an escape. I was going on a test drive relearning the shift pattern. And I saw that it skipped second every time. My heart sank. But it felt fine. That's when I looked at the service manual again and found out that it skipped second gear. Boy was I relieved 🥵😅

I've had various manual transmissions open and could see how they work.

For automatics it's always been a black box to me. I've changed fluid, filters and input/output seals, but you can't just spin the input and see the various pieces move and change on a bench like on a manual. Thank you for that insight.
Although I sometimes work on automatic transmissions, I'm not fond of them for that reason. I can test a manual on the bench. I can turn an engine by hand to see if everything is in proper position and nothing binds. But an automatic can't be tested until it's FULLY installed and running. So any fault or even careless error may require total removal after it's discovered.

When the 10 speeds came out in the F-150's they skipped gears 1-3 and 3-5 IIRC.

Did they still call it a 10-speed? Seems like false advertising if they did.

It had all 10 speeds but they did that for Fuel Mileage in Normal Drive Mode. If You used Sport Mode it shifts through all 10 gears. It seems like the 2017's did it the most. the 2021 I had with the 10 speed in Normal Mode it never skipped gears like My 2017 did.

Well yeah, can't do a total function test, but you can apply pressure to various parts to see if they operate, exercise the solenoids with jumper wires, that kind of thing. If you work through it bit by bit, in theory you catch any hangups... or just totally don't notice you stacked the clutch packs the wrong way or forgot the runout bearings, or missed a ball in the valvebody and oh shit that's $60 of ATF wasted again

So yah, I tend toward only tackling the one part at a time fixes and crossing my fingers it gets to 5 figures before something else lets go. Not that I'm likely to see inside another one for a decade unless I get a big shop and a project..... though even when they run great sometimes that shift kit looks real simple...

Yeah I hope it's that thing where like the only make that trusts Nissan's Jatco figures on those is Nissan and they blow them up at half the mileage of any other brand that buys Jatcos and do their own belt and braces safety margin programming.

I was lucky enough to drive a friend's new GT3 RS, it has an "automated manual" 7-speed and I think the way it's designed it can't skip gears. So, when you're driving slowly in city traffic, you clearly hear and feel it shift through like 6 gears by the time you get up to 20 MPH. It feels really strange, made me realize that skipping gears makes sense in everyday driving

On a manual, you only really need 2nd and 4th  .... strangely some 4 speed autos more or less work like that, 1st is low and they almost never use it, though you can get in it by selecting 1 or L for low. So they usually launch in 2nd, and then 3rd gear is usually a ratio you'd normally consider as 4th gear, and 4th gear is an overdrive gear more like 5th or E on some manual boxes, and depending on programming and engine power, you may never be in it much in city driving, or if you are on and off the pedal in higher traffic highway driving.
