I put 35K miles a year on a vehicle. I had CV axle replacement at 39,000 miles. Now it’s back at the dealer at 79,000 miles. So the life span for these CV axles appears to be 39K miles at best. Other than that, I’m still loving my ‘23 Lariat. And I did buy the extended Premium warranty (transferable).

Ford should do a recall just because it's the right think to do. They know joints are a problem

CV issues seem to be less of an issue on the EcoBoost but it still occurs. I wonder if it is more prevalent for those that tow or tend to do some off road driving....or have modified suspensions. I keep hearing the Tremor CVs are more robust and will fit a non-Tremor EcoBoost. Have people had success in having Dealers use the Tremor CV as a replacement?

User polls show the majority CV failures are on stock height hybrids with stock sized tires. But, sales data shows that the majority of mavericks sold are 2wd hybrids, so parsing the data to figure out if lift, oversized tires or towing is causing cv failures is not really possible.

What we do know is that “all stock” mavericks that are not used for towing are having CV failures between 15k and 70k miles with the average failure happening around 40k. What that tells me is that a defective part is causing the failure, regardless of use case scenario or modifications.

And on the design differences and possibility of upgrade to tremor axles, yes it is possible. There are posts with side by side pictures of the two axles, the install, the price, etc. Will dealers give you tremor axles for asking at the time of a warranty repair? No. At least no posts that I have seen.

Quick maths says he replaced the first cv joint June-July 2024.

He would have been at 53k miles when the new part number became available.

I started getting a decent vibration at around 65mph while towing around 2k-2500lbs around 500 miles. It started unloaded, but was much worse loaded. Absolutely smooth unloaded at those speeds, so I blamed it on the trailer tires. I've had a bit of a vibration when deep into the throttle at low RPM (say around 2k) in lower gears, but it never bothered me much, lasts a second or so. The 65mph vib was also rhythmic, so I assumed it was the tires going in and out of sync. I had them balanced, but maybe they lost it. Any thoughts? Should I get it checked out?

I have a '22 AWD Ecoboost FX4 w/tow package with 44k on it. I'm getting a "groaning" noise from the right front at full left turn lock. Is that CV related? It's a new noise, doesn't grind or pop, it's just a low groan. No vibration at speed. Worried because i have a 1800 mile road trip coming up in 5 days.

When in doubt, the answer, at least for Ford Mavericks, is yes, your CV joints are failing.

They replaced the right CV axle on mine (80k miles). Glad I bought the extended warranty. It only cost $200 since the drivetrain warranty passed at 60,000 miles.

I'm pretty sure I'm getting this issues on my 23 Hybrid. What's the strategy for getting them to do this repair without straight out telling them what's wrong and that it needs to be a warranty up front? From my experience, mechanics hate being told what the problem is. I do have the backup camera recall that needs to be done if that helps with the strategizing

Tell them you have vibration when accelerating, that you’ve read about the CV axle issue and need that looked at. Mine’s a ‘23 hybrid with 81k miles and it’s been in twice, at about 40k/80k. They’re aware of it. If you have <60k miles on it, it should be covered under drivetrain warranty. Otherwise, it’s possibly covered under an extended warranty (w/ deductible). Otherwise, you’re on your own.

I’m at 44k miles so I’m definitely inside the warranty. I’ve never dealt with warranty issues before. Will I need to fight them or will they know. Also do you know how long it took for yours to be repaired? Worried about no vehicle.

I’ve never had any dispute about it. Ford pays them for warranty work. They did have to order the parts once they put it in the rack and verified the issue so that meant a second visit but it was an hour once parts were in.

yeah unfortunately they might say well we'll just wait to see it the other one ever fails - they're cheap sometimes like that.

If it's a Ford backed warranty, it's not the dealership being cheap. Ford allows us to only replace the faulty part under warranty. Sometimes we can get by with it. But sometimes we have to justify a repair. And randomly Ford may call for the dealership to return the defective part for inspection. If it's not bad. They MAY kick the warranty claim back. If a dealership's warranty costs per repair order are significantly higher than the other dealers in that region they attract unwanted attention and could even be subject to a warranty audit. Before you attack Ford. They're probably less strict than other manufacturers.
