Does the Rear Cross-Traffic Alert only detect vehicles and only when moving? On my Mazda, it would detect people, dogs, 2 seagulls fighting over some fries while stationary.

You don't have to be moving, but you do need to be in "Reverse" to activate. I haven't tested it to see how small of an object it will detect, but have also had mine go off for people walking past.

It only detects Vehicles or Things that approach at 4-37 MPH.

People do not set it off unless they are sprinting or are on Skateboards/Scooters/Bikes etc and moving at 4 MPH or faster.

It is not meant nor does it detect people.

The manual specifically states:
Cross traffic alert detects vehicles that approach at a speed between 4–37 mph (6–60 km/h).

That's a great point.....the "people" I was referring to were indeed riding bikes. I didn't even think about the speed thing. I suppose they could be jogging/running and still get sensed, but not just meandering past.

Mine startled me by going off for a person walking by with a shopping cart at the grocery store. I had seen it, but figured the system had seen a car that I hadn't, but no other cars were moving nearby.

Well then mine is malfunctioning I was at the grocery store and a mother with 2 kids and a shopping cart set it off.

More than likely there was a vehicle not visible to you that set it off.

If the "mother with 2 kids and a shopping cart" was behind you the vehicle would have had to stop before hitting them and more likely you would not see it in your mirrors or backup camera.

There are two indicators on the screen that shows the direction of the alert.

And a shopping cart is probably a sufficiently good enough radar reflector to meet the detection threshold.

I don't know if you have to be moving, but if I put the truck in reverse with my foot on the brake, it wards me if a vehicle is coming.
