So I banged a 2 x 10 into the tail light and put a small crack in the lens. What have you folks used to prevent it from getting worse and keeping water out?

Thanks

Ha, well in the truck world that's call "Character". I did the same thing on my F150 except it was a weed eater head instead of a 2 x 10. Mine never did leak, you may have the same experience. Not positive but I don't think it will spread like a windshield crack. Alternative would be purchasing a replacement from junkyard, ebay, your dealer, etc. All thats just my opinion, maybe others can offer other suggestions. Good Luck.

I would just watch it and see if it leaks. It might not. The crack might not propagate, either.

If your taillight turns into an aquarium, all of ^ Craig's ^ options are good.

Good luck, and congrats on the "patina." :)

You would have to remove the taillight to place it horizontal. Then use a bottle of thin CA glue to fill in the crack. Dries in 5 minutes. Do not try to do it vertically - too runny.

Just monitor it for leakage/condensation. A little bit of silicone goes a long way. Or whatever else to seal it... super glue even. I say silicone because you can force it in there, sand the excess then regloss the whole taillight and make sure it's sealed in there.

Some clear glue to fill in the cracks. Also, I have used the 3M taillight repair kit. Essentially Red transparent adhesive tape that matches very well. I cracked one of my taillights on my Maverick. The plastic on the Maverick Tailights is SUPER THIN.

You could also look for a used replacement on eBay and just keep your original as a back up!
What I ended up doing was ordering a right and left LARIAT taillight set on eBay and installed them on My XL Maverick!

Tail light repair tape is essential in every trucks tool box!

Had someone back into me once and I'll never be in that position again. Worst case scenario too as I was on a road trip across the country. Spare bulbs and tape at the ready now.

A small piece of clear packing tape over the damaged area to seal it?

Mine cracked as well. I ended up paying 230 after using some of my FORD points. Not sure how it got cracked, but it was.

That 230 was part of the $ I was saving for a FT-991A, SOB! I didn't go the tape route as it would have bugged me knowing that there is a crack there.

I would go the silicone route , rub it in , clean off the top . If you go super glue , make sure to get plastic specific ca as normal super glue when drying will white frost the area from the cyo to plastic heat reaction .especially because it’s translucent .
Otherwise obout 205$ for a new one .
Unless your keeping in show truck condition , I’d wait to see if it gets worse.
Doesn’t look to bad though, no chunks taken out.

Thanks all. For now I went with the 3M taillight repair tape. Time will tell how it ages.
