Considering an AWD Ford Maverick to serve as a 2nd/3rd line multi-use vehicle in the family, it would be replacing a 2014 Toyota 4Runner which is approaching 200k miles. We also have a Camry which my wife drives and a truck I use for work. We have two kids in college, so they would be using the Maverick during breaks and in the summer when they are home. I would daily drive the Maverick when they are in school and DD my work truck when they are home using the Maverick. With the AWD, my wife as an RN would take the Maverick in winter weather. Also want to be able to pull a UHaul 4x8 or 5x8 enclosed trailer and a 3.5k lb utility trailer loaded up to 2500 lbs or so.

Looking at a 2.0 EB Maverick instead of say a Ranger or Tacoma to give my wife and daughters a more car-like drive and an AWD system so they don't have to deal with a part-time 4WD transfer case like the 4Runner has. The Maverick checks a lot of boxes including decent routine fuel economy with the 4 cyl EB in comparison to something like a Honda Ridgeline.

What issues should I be looking out for? I read about CV axles, but that seems to be a hybrid issue. I wanted to ask, if you have a VIN, would a Ford dealer run it and give you Ford-dealer performed maintenance and any repairs? I'm a little hesitant on Ford - I consider it the best of the domestics, but my history is mixed. I owned two F150s, a 1990 and 2002. The paint fell of the 1990 and the 2002 had a mis-fire that took probably six months and multiple trips to the dealer to get diagnosed and resolved. Both were covered under warranty, but they were significant issues, and in the case of the 2002, required multiple trips to the dealer and I think I had to get Ford involved. Also had a 1993 Ranger which I consider one of the best vehicles I ever owned, as trouble free as any Toyota we have owned. Along with my Dad, we've had three Camrys and the 4Runner since 2007. Toyota's aren't perfect, but all four vehicles have been excellent, with most issues caused by northeast salted covered winter roads.

So I'm giving the Maverick a real hard look, just nothing out there that checks so many boxes. My wife gets Consumer Reports, and the Maverick gets high reliability ratings. Just looking to see if I missing anything to consider or specific problem areas and how they might be resolved. Thanks in advance for any info.

In August 2023 we found a 2022 EB AWD XLT Maverick with a little under 14k miles at a Hyundai used car lot.
This was literally a day or two after our Kia Sportageā€˜s engine broke down and we wouldn’t get that car back for another two months.
After a test drive and looking at the CarFax, we decided to go for it.
I’d recommend researching the VIN for any prior history that you can find including recalls.
Also if you’re shopping at a non-Ford dealer, I’d pass on any maintenance contract . We signed up for an oil change/tire rotation contract though the Hyundai dealer and were told to go to a Ford dealer. Twice. We canceled the maintenance contract,
Otherwise owning the truck has been a dream. Other than recalls, no issues whatsoever.
Make sure you read all the fine print and of course the Maverick truck club forum is a great source of information. Best of luck in your search.

For the uses/situation you describe, I think the Maverick would be a great pick.

For the CV axles, Ecoboosts have the issue too. I had mine replaced earlier this year, about 42k miles at the time, but it was covered for free by a NHTSA Customer Satisfaction Program (basically a Recall Lite). My truck is a late-build 2022. More recent model years have the upgraded axles from the factory.

Otherwise, this truck has just been gas an oil for me. Like with any vehicle, be sure to keep up with the regular maintenance. Depending on miles, you will want to do a transmission fluid change (not flush), and change the PTU and RDU fluids (essentially the "transfer case" and rear diff).

I have a MY22 EB AWD 4K tow, I’ve had Zero issues, my experience is great little truck. I wouldn’t hesitate buy another. Just do the normal due diligence in checking out the history if your buying used vehicles.

Axil problem fixed some time during the 2025 year. Why was your truck misfiring.

oil changes, oil changes and then oil changes...then the rest of the scheduled MX. Oil changes with the correct oil is vital for turbo charged engines

Starting in the 25's, the Eco engine is almost a total redesign,. Older ones had many problems; suggest you wait a year or two and get a 25. However, many older ones had few problems. So who knows for sure.

The EBs from 21 onward are reliable and sorted out. Sounds like you know how to maintain a vehicle so we won't get into that. I got mine new in 22. It's AWD and it's hands down the best all around vehicle I've ever owned. 76k miles with absolutely no mechanical issues, weird noises, or interior creaks. Cheap plastic is my only gripe. I generally baby it, but I've taken it on some pretty tough rocky mountain roads/trails. Your family will love it.

New or used did you say, I had 22 fx4 only problem was radio, factory updates fixed that, a few recalls to be expected on new models, loved that truck reminded me of my ranger I had also, now have 25 lariat 5k 2 software recalls took a hour at my oil change NBD I waited wasn't a big deal. There isn't one bad review on the Maverick ECO or Hybrid in fact truck of the year by many. If you thinking used check for repaired body damage, Yes I sold my 22 that was like NEW not a scratch, changed oil at 2k and 5k after that, somebody got a great truck even if they overpaid for it. The average new car price is 50k now I paid 39k for my Lariat and have more options than that 50k vehicle, guys complain no memory or cooling seats I say give me a break what do you expect for 40k
I complain about the stupid dial shifter, but it works and get used to it. Am sure you looked at the countless Utube reviews they all want one after their review.

You’ll need the 4k tow package!

There have been very few horror reports about the Ecoboost. A few things to note...

  • A handful have reported transmission replacements the other side of 50,000 miles.
  • Starting with the 2025 model year, the ecoboost engine was improved in some meaningful ways. Just worth noting.
  • And of course you have the styling and infotatainment changes in 2025 model year.
  • If you buy used, you get the powertrain warranty out to 50,000 miles.
FWIW, my personal 2022 ecoboost XLT is going on 38,000 miles with zero problems. One argument for buying used is that the value of my pristine vehicle is only $24,000 here in WNC. So depending on where you live, you can really steal a used ecoboost Maverick. They don't seem to hold value like the hybrids.

OP, if you can hold off a few months, Ford is showing their new BEV small truck later this year. At least that gives you another data point when making your choice. Can't buy it till summer 2027, but Farley said last week that they'll show it to the public later this year.

Thanks for all of the comments!! I posted the same thread on ford-trucks.com and hadn't got any response as of a day or two ago. This looks like the place to be.

I think I'm just about at the point of ending the research on vehicle options and go with the Maverick. There just isn't anything out comparable. I looked at say the Honda Ridgeline, but that's a pretty sizeable vehicle, has the V6 which isn't going to get much better mpg than the 4Runner. The mpg, even with the 2.0EB is a big plus. I've been reluctant to consider turbo'd engines, stick with old school NA. But you can only get the best of both worlds with a turbo and it seems like the 2.0EB is pretty solid

I was focusing on used, however, I'm seeing decent inventories of new, 2026 and even some 2025s and that seems to be driving some relatively steep discounts from what I can see. I'm tempted to go new. I did see that at least some of the local 2025s have a "stop sale," until June for an open recall I assume waiting on parts. Would that be the CV axles or is it something else?

Only other open item is tow package or not. Of course I'd prefer to have it, but not sure I need it. Small utility trailer used around town and then a 4x8 or 5x8 enclosed UHaul trailer. The 5x8 enclosed weighs 900 lbs from what I can find online, that leaves 1,100 lbs of payload which is more than enough to bring a daughter to college and back. Frontal area on the 5x8 is probably 25 sq. ft. (5x5) so that is below the 29 sq. ft. limit for the frontal area limitation for Maverick's w/o the tow package. I would have to add a hitch receiver, install seems pretty straightforward for a 2" Class III and I would just need a Flat 4 trailer connector. If that is plug and play, adding the hitch and wiring should be no problem. I'm not sure how common the trailer pkg is. There are probably 50-60 Mavericks on the lot at local dealers I need to start checking out.

So, I'll be off to start looking for Mavericks in the next couple days. Thanks again for all of the comments.

One comment about the tow package from a guy who ordered without it (and doesn't tow). It helps resale value. And it improves engine cooling and more, so you could argue it improves robustness even for those who don't tow. Kind of wish I'd ordered with it, even though technically I don't need it.

I'd grab a 2025 4K Tow before they are gone! You should have a decent selection in your location.
I understand that MY2026 lost some content vs MY2025, I am not sure what that includes beside redesigned inside door panels.

Great news, OP! Yes, definitely get out there and test drive a few.

As for the tow package, I recommend getting a truck with it. Not only does it help resale later on, but it will already come with a 2" receiver installed, plus a 4-pin and 7-pin hookup. It also has an integrated trailer brake controller mounted on the dash.

I think the 4K Tow package is great value also because of the additional items for engine and transmission cooling, plus a peppier rear-end gear. It's all worth it in the long run.
