Wired the Kia mirror up to the fuse box on passenger floor side as others have. No splicing, soldered additional wiring needed to reach the fuse box. Easy to drop the front of the headliner and remove the A pillar trim. If for any reason I run into warranty electrical issues, I can remove this easily if I feel the dealer might blame any electrical issue on this mod. I also do not have to worry about splice connections losing connectivity. Pretty happy with this mod, cheap and now I can open both my garage doors and have auto dimming mirror for ~ $30.

I just tapped the "on when hot" wire from the lights (for both the homelink and compass/dim).

I like the solution so much I'm going to get another mirror for my 2000 Miata :D

Anyone find this still for sale anywhere recently? Looks like both links are discontinued:cry:
I just happened on this post a couple of days ago - read the whole thing (my wife is wondering what the heck I am doing). Really good info here and I bookmarked several pages.

Seems like the challenge might be finding one of these mirrors with a decent price - so I have been looking all over and located 5-6 Kia parts operations that say they have in stock. I have emailed each requesting to confirm availability before I order. After I get responses, I'll post links to those that have confirmed part availability. Prices are ranging from $10.89-13.49. Anything in that price range is totally fine with me.

Hope to get back to the forum with some news on availability in the next 2-3 days.

Is there someone in the Richmond Virginia area that can install this?

I bought the mirror but can't find anyone that is available!

Thanks!

Not sure if you figured it out but thought I'd share since I just got this same mirror.

This is how I wired everything and it is working great:

Black wire in the mirror harness is Ground. Splice it to black wire in the overhead light harness.
Green wire in the mirror harness is your constant 12v (Homelink). Splice it to the yellow wire in the overhead light harness.
White wire on the mirror harness is the intermittent 12v or when keyed on (Compass/Auto Dimming). Splice it to the purple wire in the overhead light harness.

This is what I did and it works as I want it to. The garage buttons work always. The compass comes on when I turn the key to the on position. I know some prefer to have the garage buttons to work only when keyed for safety. But I kept a garage door opener in the truck previously anyway so what is the difference? It's much more convenient to just always be available. But if you wanted to only have the garage door opener work when the truck is keyed on splice the Green and White wires from the mirror harness to the purple wire. I love this mod. About $21 shipped and works perfectly. Took about 15 minutes to complete.

I will add that I have a Sommer Direct Drive garage door opener. The Homelink instructions included with the mirror to program it don't work. It was very frustrating to be following the steps and not get it to work. I found a PDF of the Direct Drive instruction manual online which had different instructions that worked perfectly:

Hold down all three garage door buttons until the lights turn off. Takes approximately 30 seconds. You can verify the garage buttons are in learn mode by pressing them. They should rapidly flash for 2 seconds and then turn solid. Now that Homelink is in learn mode press the learn button on the garage door opener and then go back to your mirror and press and hold the garage door button you wish to pair for approximately 3 seconds. It will rapidly flash and then turn solid. Now press the garage door button you just programmed and it should work. All other methods online got Homelink did not work except for this one. You do not need to program the Homelink buttons to the garage door opener transmitter remotes, just the opener itself.
Not sure what's up but my compass has a C where the direction should read there . My luck if I got a bad mirror

The instructions with the mirror explain that means that it needs to be calibrated. I never bothered with the official calibration method of driving in a circle, but after one trip to the store, presto, it calibrated itself. Not defective.

If you read the instruction it would tell you to calibrate the mirror.

This mirror was the best $22 investment I have ever made. Works as intended and I like how it sits higher and out of the way compared to the factory one.

just installed the Kia mirror — Bought it back in March when this post started, from KiaParts.com. Paid almost as much in shipping as for the mirror itself, but still quite an inexpensive part.

I’ve been waiting for warmer weather to tackle the job, as I have a fear of prying off trim pieces in the cold and snapping plastic bits.

But ultimately, one of the easiest and most satisfying mods I’ve done., thanks to folks who posted about it here.

Took my time removing the map light piece and then the black windshield piece above the mirror.

And then, the easy part — thanks to a nifty piece of wiring made for me by @mikeakasully . He made a T-harness with male and female connectors that snap into the map light power connection, with a splice that goes to the new mirror.

Just unplug the wire to the map lights from the power source connector, and plug the new wiring harness in between.

So the connection to the map lights is restored, and a splice from there goes to the mirror, using the wires with connector that came with the mirror.

And all easily reversible, which I like.

And of course, the best is, it works. Calibrated the compass feature easily. The garage door openers were a little tricky, but stuck with it, and got them to work without too much angst. (I wish the garage door buttons lit up, but a minor complaint.)

Haven’t had a chance to test the auto-dimming feature yet, but assume that will work also.

The photo below shows the wiring harness (wrapped in cloth electrical tape) in place between the power connector up top and the map light connector at bottom.

And you can see the red and black wires coming out of that bundle that go to the mirror connector.

Thanks, @mikeakasully , for helping me out with this project, and for putting up with all my questions.

When it comes to this mirror, you can check your local KIa dealer and save the shipping fee, I have installed 5 of these and the last 3 went to a local Kia dealer. They ask what model KIa it's going on, and when I tell them a Ford Maverick they laughed.

Well, now that would have been smart! (So used to ordering online, it’s become a reflex….)
