I'm just gonna assume your black trim is pinching (aka sitting snug on top of) the wires lol, not sure how else to ask the question.
Yes, mine runs just under the black plastic. No drilling. There’s a bit of a gap, no extreme pinching.

Just another success post checking in. Maverick XLT no sunroof. Thanks for all the informative posts so far!

  1. Bought a Gentex-453 from ebay ~$40 (Autodim & 3button Homelink & Compass)
    • Any 'Make' works it doesn't matter if its a Kia, Subaru, Nissan, Honda, etc... just get one that has wires
    • I got one with the orange compass to match the orange trim accents.
    • Glass is almost identical size as OEM, the frame is a little thicker is all.
  2. Bought a few Quick Splice (18-22awg), needed 3.
  3. Removed old mirror
    • Torx screw secures it to window, loosen but don't need to remove.
    • Then slide mirror UP towards the roof off the clip on the window.
  4. Pop off the Camera trim by just grabbing it and pulling it away from the window.
    1. It is leashed (~3-5" plastic cord highlighted blue in pic) so it'll just dangle there once you've popped it off:
Ford Maverick Cheap auto-dimming, homelink mirror leash
  5. Pull the Dome trim with these super easy pro tips- No Trim Puller needed:
    • Open the sunglasses holder
    • Grab a flat head screwdriver
    • Pry trim away from the black in this area on both sides:

Ford Maverick Cheap auto-dimming, homelink mirror trim2
    • Pry it enough that you can grab the trim from outside and gently pull down:
Ford Maverick Cheap auto-dimming, homelink mirror trim3
    • As noted in several other posts the trim tips down and the front has posts that can break, so be careful!
  6. Gentex-453 is 3wire: Hot (always on), Ignition (key in On), Ground
    • The area is tight and I didn't want to have things rattling around so I used the Ignition wire from the camera (purple with a stripe):

    • Used Hot (yellow with green stripe) and Ground (black with a stripe) from the dome light connector:
Ford Maverick Cheap auto-dimming, homelink mirror hot_ground
  7. My cable was thicker and I needed to file away some of the Camera trim so the cable could comfortable fit through, just depends what kind of wiring you get from your Gentex-453 purchase.

  8. All setup followed PDF instructions here, pics are little different but everything worked the same.
Ford Maverick Cheap auto-dimming, homelink mirror gentex453
    • I cleaned the mirror afterwards ha, just noticed all the smudges when posting.
Turns off immediately when I turn key off and turns on when I start it, no power drain.

Thank you for those details! 🍻 If you find the time, could you measure the dimensions of that mirror compared to OEM mirror? I can't find dimensions for mirrors anywhere as I'm trying to look them up, I kinda want a bigger one if possible and I'd pay extra for it if so.

I decided to go a different route I dint like the idea of splicing the wires so I when with a frameless homelink Toyota mirror that is battery power as easy as bolt on and off

This is likely the way I'm going if I change it up too.

Slightly unrelated, but while shopping for the Kia mirror I found cheap Kia soul puddle light kits.
Are these also a massive deal or completely incompatible with our Mavericks?

I supposed with enough money/skill you can make anything work, but the Soul puddle lights weren't even compatible with some of the Soul models. IIRC, the Turbo was not compatible even though they looked basically the same.

I don't think you should bother with this.

The glass is the exact same size, just the plastic frame is a touch wider. Pic for reference :)

I have a question regarding these mirror installations: many(most) of the OEM models are have feature that turns the auto-dim off when shifted into reverse (in my experience) so you have a clear view out your rear window when backing up. I guess none of these require or have a reverse wire? Furthermore, with back up cameras, it is less of an issue.

Never heard of that, no issues, we have a dark driveway and use the backup camera.

What is the small button for directly over the rear view mirror?
