Why can't the passenger just call on their cell phone and avoid the vehicle interface altogether?
Why should we have to? Plenty of reasons a passenger would need a keypad. Is it really more dangerous than hunting down trying to change the temperature settings or select a song while streaming music which aren't locked out. Android Auto has tons of screen interaction and isn't blocked.

Silly nanny move.

I would hope you aren't in the habit of handing anyone anything while you are driving......

So, it would be fine with you if the phone manufacturer locked out the number pad, but you take offense to Ford locking out the number pad on the infotainment screen? Makes perfect sense!
Why can't I hand someone something while driving. How is that even unsafe?

Clearly I wouldn't want the phone to lock out. I'm asking why of it's so bad and such a liability phones don't do it. Seems like people try to manage everyone else's lives. Let the man ask his question without judgements.

Or, more to the point, keeping distracted drivers from hurting innocent people.

I doubt there is a setting to change it. It's apparently a safety feature to help keep them (Ford) from being sued for a distracted driver claim.

Here is the deal......I respect everyone's right to have an opinion that differs from my own. And I understand that when I ask a question on an open forum, I am going to get mixed opinions when it is a hot button topic like safety features. Nobody is stopping the OP from asking. And I am sure if there is a solution then someone will post it. I wont be mad if that happens.

Similar situation to when we get folks asking how to disable the seat-belt reminder chime. Or the "check your back row seats for kids you might have forgotten back there and who might cook in the heat" messaging/warnings.

On average, 38 children under the age of 15 die from heatstroke each year after being left in a car, according to the National Safety Council.
Children's body temperatures rise much more quickly than adults, and they can begin to suffer heatstroke when their temperature reaches 104 degrees. A body temperature of 107 degrees can be fatal, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Just putting it out there. Folks are going to feel strongly one direction or the other. Asking this type of question is going to have mixed replies. It comes with the territory.

sometimes you don’t know until *after* the phone call is made via voice that you have to go through button prompts. I don’t view one number press on a number pad a big deal.

have you used the Waze navigation app using Apple car play? If so, have you reported accidents on the screen while driving? No different then touching a number pad.

I generally agee with your take, but on the rear seat warning, there are legit reasons to turn that off. Some of us don't have kids and will never ever have a child in the backseat.

"Oh, this is a call I can't handle while driving. Time to hang up and deal with it later!"

You're not getting the point. Responsible drivers aren't fussing around with numerical keypads while driving.

This is still an annoyance. What's the lesser of 2 evils?....fumbling to get my phone out , unlock it by starring at it rather than the road ahead or hitting a number on the keypad ....just like I would for seat heat or windshield defrost or A/C on....or changing the radio station?????? I mean come on .....makes no sense

people don't want to hear that even on speakerphone talking on the phone is the equivalent of drunk driving. The distraction reduces reaction time/ awareness. The brain can't do multiple HIGH LEVEL functions simultaneously.
