It's 3 degrees back at my hometown this morning. We started the car, scraped any ice off the windows (2-5min), got in and drove gentle.

It's ALWAYS been best practice to at least bi-weekly drive fairly intense (highway speed) for at least 20minutes to keep any car/truck engine performing its best.

Idling more than 5min is a waste of gas with no gain.

I've been 46-47 mpg consistently until lately when the weather has been in the 20's. I start it up and let it warm up for 15 min. and this knocks the mpg down to 36 mpg. The Escape that I trade in gave me 32mpg in this weather. My opinion of the Atkinson engine is kaput, cold weather must knock down the compression ratio reducing power.
It's probably because the hybrid battery is cold. It has to warm up also to perform good.

Only need five minutes or less. Remote start while you are putting on your coat. Use the heated seat and steering wheel.

Finally made it back to the back roads. Don't rush me while I'm hovering along in my Fighter Jet Maverick. I could've done better but sometimes the afterburnerfoot kicks in. And the heat was on too.

no heated seat or wheel. The engine is week on making heat, using less gas makes less heat.

No heated seat or wheel, using less gas results in less heat The Atkinson engine is a fair weather engine. That's why it isn't used in regular applications and only hybrids.

those are my stats pretty much exactly and I don't warm it up - mileage definitely drops in the winter, I'm in Michigan and your numbers are the same I get. It's just how it is.

I get very good heat from my Maverick Hybrid. Quicker than my Honda CRV I believe. Sounds like yours does need the 15 minutes warm-up.

1st I bought a lower priced Hybrid with all the features I wanted and only cost $35k, much less than buying any other Hybrid Truck out there!
2nd I save so much with great 40-45 MPGs for 8 months of the year I really don't care if I'm burning gas with no MPGs for 3 or 4 months & getting 35 MPGs
3rd What's it cost to warm up my baby for 10-15 minutes? Yes I said 10-15 minutes depending on the weather... it was 13° this morning! 25¢? So 5 days a week X 4 months=80 days X 25¢=$20 x 10 years = $200 (I'll keep it until me or my mav dies or at least 10 years whichever come first)
4th I saved more than that $20 in 1 month just on the cost of my fantastic Maverick compared to ANY other crappy 40-80k hybrid out there.
Please note: you can pick apart my math & or my way life but I don't care... I love this truck!!
Signed warm & happy

...Way too much wet coming in on feet and open doors. Running defrost helps but only if you have a longer drive home. I don’t.
If the Maverick's humidistat detects high humidity in the cab and if you have the HVAC system on, it's gonna run the A/C compressor, regardless of whether you turn it on or not.

I bought an even lower priced Hybrid with all the features I wanted, for $12k less than yours.

Despite a mpg drop in winter, the overall MPG and reduced maintenance cost of this truck is incredible.

I believe that you're truck is behaving normally.

A cool down will primarily use the HVB (high voltage battery) which will only run the ICE (internal combustion engine) when the HVB has become depleted.

A warm up will always run the ICE more because the ICE is used as the heater. The heater is a heat transfer from the exhaust and is used not only to heat cabin, but also battery system. The ICE will run in a warm up, even if climate control is off. The truck is unable to warm up using the HVB.

To me the most surprising thing is that you've been getting 46 mpg while remote starting the truck to cool it off every day.... In my book, that's remarkable.
He stated he only turns AC on if ambulant is 95°!
