My issue is that the camera and latch locks are not waterproof, but water resistant. When I washed my truck bed out and closed the tailgate, I seriously watched what looked like gallons of muddy water pour out. That means all connectors, housings, ect in the tailgate were soaking for several minutes in muddy water.
I'm looking to have a rubber or similar material that I can attach to the bottom of the tailgate that will coverall the holes in the bottom of the tailgate and divert 99% of the water with the gate down and uncover the holes with the gate up. Seems like the best way to protect the tailgate to me.
I bought this off Amazon > LZLRUN 3D Carbon Fiber Vinyl Wrap - Outdoor Rated for Automotive Use - 12 inches x 60 inches <.
I put this stuff on the door sills of the two Escapes and it totally lasted 5 years with dog claws trying to scratch it. So, now the Mav. . I have enough to cover the exposed paint areas in the back of the bed and including this area by the big hole in the tailgate. I would want to do this so that it vents well.

Yes, any kind of cover would be beneficial in my opinion. Some use tape, some use plastic. In my opinion, the drain holes closest to the outside of the tailgate will not let much dirt and water in if the large hole is covered. I may be wrong, but the inside of my bed looks pretty clean.
