I have a small yard clean up business in the Kansas City area. I just bought a Maverick and am picking it up this week. 2022 XLT.

The truck already has a folding cover over the bed.

In addition to normal yard debris such as branches, I pick up a lot of those spikey gumballs in the spring and early summer. They're the size of golf balls and I can fill the truck bed in just a yard or two.

I have noticed that the Ford bed extender has a lot of gaps through which spiky gumballs (the size of a golf ball) could fall out. Plus I have noticed it curves and leaves a few inches of unused space on the tailgate.

I'm wondering if anyone has used other options which fold onto the tailgate in more of a rectangular shape and also have smaller gaps. I feel like I have seen pictures but can't find it in a search.

Thank you!

How I hate gumball trees. Iā€˜m unaware of any bed extender on the market that would meet your desired criteria. A suggestion- take a length of open mesh material, chicken wire, construction site plastic fencing, or something similar and attach it to the bed extender with cable ties.

As far as the bed extender goes, I've seen a thread where an aftermarket extender with a squarer end was installed and made use of the entire tailgate area. As to the spikey gumballs, what about a tarp that covers the extender?

I was going to buy an aftermarket extender on amazon. There were reviews of people that used them on the Maverick, but some had to make some cuts to get them to fit or make sure that parts were inserted fully. I do not know of any bed extender that uses anything other than bars with large gaps. Every bed extender I have seen would need modification.

That's a great idea. I'm thinking maybe a net would wrap well around it.

I don't have a bed extender. When I haul brush I open the tailgate, put down a really big tarp, and pile the brush on top of the tarp as high as I like. I tug the loose sides of the tarp over the brush like I'm making a giant burrito and secure the tarp so I don't lose my load and the tarp doesn't flap in the wind.

When I get to my brush pile I remove most of the brush by hand then drag whatever's left in the tarp to the pile. This leaves the truck bed clean without having to rake or sweep out leaves and twigs or in your case gumballs.

I used the Amazon one too recommended from those on this forum. I did get the extra hardware to attached the pivot sections. Thankfully it was warned about here so had them ready.
