I have to believe that I am not the only one happy to see this ridiculous "feature" repealed going forward.

Auto stop/start was NEVER a government mandate in the US, that's just been a certain type of media talking point. The government mandated a minimum fleet gas mileage standard and many car company's made the choice to use start/stop as a means to get there. In my opinion, most every car should have been hybrids at least ten years ago, and if they had, we would have been way ahead of where we are now and start/stop on a standard ICE engine would have never been needed in the first place to achieve that standard.

And in 2026 ALL vehicles should be painted Barbie pink with wide white wall tires. Why? Because that is what I THINK YOU SHOULD DRIVE! Makes as much rational sense as "all should be hybrids." Why not ALL should be EVs? A thread about a repeal of a MANDATE that never was a mandate and people want to MANDATE what type of vehicle I can buy. SMF'NH!
I suppose, it isn't a surprise, 😱
I have a real problem with others telling ME what I NEED (ie size house, vehicle, or what size meal) to live my life in their world, versus what I want and how I choose to live.
Example: A person who drives a Ford Festa back and forth to work. Can't in their world, fathom someone wanting to driving a Ford F150-F350 back and forth to work.

I never understood why people dislike this feature.
I can only speak for myself, but I have disliked it from the first time it activated. My daily commute is mostly stop signs. I find absolutely no reason to come to a stop, engine shuts off, restarts, and I drive away just as fast as you read that. The gas saved in no way could possibly be worth more than the extra wear on the starter. I also don't like that on restart, the truck bucks for a second when I try to start moving again.
A.S.S. would be much better if it could be activated by a button on the steering wheel. If I pull up to a red light I know I'll be sitting at for a minute, I would shut the engine down. But for a 1 or 2 second stop? Oh please.....

Start-stop is a technology that automatically shuts down a vehicle’s engine when a driver comes to a complete stop, and then automatically restarts the engine when the driver takes their foot off the brake pedal. Developed in response to the 1970s oil crisis, the feature was intended to cut vehicle idling, fuel consumption and emissions.
Why would technology designed to lower 1970's era vehicles emissions work on modern much more sophisticated low emission vehicles?

So you would admit MANDATING what vehicle people can purchase is stupid? P. S. My reply was sarcasm and EVs were not universally mandated anyways.
Admit? Why do I have to admit anything. That sounds like a mandate. 😉
I never thought ASS was a good idea for ICE powered vehicles for a variety of reasons, and while EVs can work for some the cart went before the horse IMHO.

California "mandating" that only EV's would be sold in that state after 2035 would have been universal for those in California, but fortunately that bad idea was flushed in May of last year.

Every time an ICE stops heat builds up super fast in specific areas of the engine. But not everywhere.
The engine lubricants main job is heat transfer. It’s that simple. Motor oils second job is to keep high speed parts effortlessly moving super close to each other without making contact.

At a certain temp and at a low Idle RPM Air Cooled Harley Davidson models shut down the back cylinder Completely. That’s how they survive parades. Air cooled remember ?
The oil keeps flowing and with half the motor not creating heat that half acts like a massive heat sink.
Our engines stop, the oil AND the coolant stops flowing.

Stupid beyond belief. Really Ford ?
I mean Dayum !

Most engine wear occurs during startup and the first few seconds of operation, The oil drains to the sump, leaving top-end components unprotected for the first few seconds.

Start/stop is hard on starters and flywheel teeth. You can theoretically put ten times or more the amount of wear on starter components in a year with start/stop enabled.

There are more effective ways to reduce pollution than start/stop technology.

Look at U.S. gasoline consumption last 7 years.

Gasoline consumption peaked around 2018 at over 143 billion gallons annually, dipped significantly in 2020 to ~127.7 billion due to pandemic restrictions, and has recovered to roughly 137 billion gallons by 2023. Consumption generally remains near or below 2018-2019 levels despite population growth.

The number of registered vehicles on the road in the US has grown steadily over the last decade, increasing from approximately 260 million in 2014 to over 284 million by 2023, representing a consistent upward trend despite minor fluctuations. The fleet is heavily comprised of light-duty trucks and passenger cars, with over 289 million light vehicles reported in operation by 2025.

2023 is the last year that date is available. We are using 6 billion gallons a year less than we did 5 years ago while the number of vehicles has steadily increased. The price of gas has dropped significantly due to reduced demand. EVs and Hybrids are a major reason for this trend. Burning 6 billion gallons less leads to a significant reduction in emissions without tearing up engine components.

The AP article is obviously biased.
ASS is a simple knee jerk reaction by those oblivious to unintended consequences.
Especially in the case of a turbo, it's a really bad idea without some additional engineering to keep the turbo alive. For city driving, a hybrid is obviously a much more effective solution rather than stopping and starting a car's engine 100 times to travel a mile.

repealed isn't going to retrofit any vehicles.. and doesn't mean that manufacturers are going to drop it either. also doesn't mean if another president comes to power that it won't be reinstated either.

I agree.

I just used the quote from the AP article to make the same point.

This is correct, auto stop/start was never a government mandate...not sure why the government is making this a big deal but it doesn't surprise me.

I can only speak for myself. My feeling is that the defeat button should remember the last setting when you restart your truck. In other words, the A.S.S would become optional. I don't really think that feature would have been too much to ask.

I do think it is able to be defeated in ForScan, right?
The oil companies want to end any feature that saves fuel. If it remembers the last setting that should be enough to satisfy most people who don't have an agenda. But the current administration is all in on oil.

Unfortunately, history has shown that government and bad ideas are often on a first name basis...

I use mine only when I am stopped at a long traffic light, so I am always turning it on and off. I wish it was defaulted to off and up to the driver when they want to use it. It's annoying when performing quick stops, such as, stopped at a stop sign or waiting to turn left.

I have to believe that I am not the only one happy to see this ridiculous "feature" repealed going forward. The A.S.S. on my Maverick quit working months ago. Most likely a combination of the months long cold weather and a battery slowly dying into oblivion.
Excellent news. I disabled mine via FORSCAN on day one. Finally some common sense going around.
