Are mudflaps necessary?

Are mudflaps necessary? All my pickup trucks in the past came with mudflaps but my Maverick didn't. Last time I drove in the snow the sides of my truck got very dirty from road grime and sand. I don't know if the dirt came from my wheels or all the other vehicles on the road or both. If I add mudflaps will it help?

Help, yes. It will reduce the amount of dirt and debris thrown up, but not by a lot.

Of course; if you look at the sides of the Maverick, you can see where the lower part of the side panels can get blasted by anything thrown up from the tires. It only gets worse if you get oversize tires. I put the Mabett mud guards on mine shortly after getting the sides all yucked up in just a 12 mile errand when the roads were freshly damp after a long period of no rain. They ended up being the first aftermarket item I added and I'm very happy with them.

Yea ! Mudflaps helps protect the paint on side of truck . can find them on Amazon . I paid about $40 2.5 years ago for set of 4 on Amazon .

In my opinion, yes, necessary. 100% effective? No. In the pix below I had just installed mine and they did help but after around 90 miles on a crappy day you'll easily see that there was still a spot or two (or more!) of crap on the very clean Mav I left home with.

I installed the Ford OEM Mud Flaps using reward points I think they protect the paint up to a point but adds additional surfaces to wash IMO they give the truck a nicer stance

Definitely reduces kick up of dirt and debris. On briny roads during a snowstorm, mud flaps just become another surface caked with grime

You don't like 'em, others do. Opinions make the world go 'round. Simple fact is they may be less effective against flying dirty/salty moisture in the air but are very effective against salty slush, mud, sand, small rocks. I'm cheap (thrifty), if they didn't have value I wouldn't spend money on them.

Are they necessary? No. If they were necessary, they would be standard equipment, like tires and a steering wheel. Do they help? Absolutely, but only in certain situations.

I live on a gravel road and travel on similar roads frequently. Mudflaps definitely help keep the sides of the truck cleaner on that type of road.

But nothing will help with airborne road spray caused by rain, snow/ice road treatment spray from your and other vehicles in nasty weather.

As for how they look, IMO they look fine on a truck. Maybe not, on a Pavement Princess.
