Mar 1 2022 2022 Maverick, 2020-2022 Escape – 2.5L FHEV – Idle Surge And/Or Rough Idle WithHigh Temperature In The Catalytic Convertor And Sulfur Odor In The Cab
Some 2022 Maverick and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles equipped with a 2.5L full hybrid electric vehicle (FHEV) powertrain may exhibit an idle surge and/or rough idle with high temperature in the catalytic convertor and sulfur odor in the cab. This may be due to the software installed in the powertrain control module (PCM).This condition does not affect vehicle durability and no additional diagnosis or service is required for this condition at this time. Inform customers that they can continue to drive the vehicle and engineering is currently developing a software update that is expected in the last week of March 2022. Once the softwareupdate is available, contact the customer and schedule a follow-up appointment for repair.

Ford PTS, which is used in dealer service departments -- there is no tsb or ssm number at this time, since it is just a notification to service departments that there WILL SOON BE a tsb or ssm...

Wow.

So MAJOR!

Much scare.

Any word from people that give us Maverick news or info? I feel like they’d try their hardest to ask for us or anything. But I haven’t heard a word. Not saying they’re supposed to, but they let us know about so many other issues and bad news, so I thought it would make sense about this… considering how it’s MAJOR

Can’t say I have found 1 Ford Escape Hybrid with the same issue. Checked their forums and I’m sure some one would have brought it up in the last 3years!!!

Sounds like Ford is downplaying the seriousness of this issue to cover their ass. The problem seems exclusive to Mavericks but they spread it to the Escape Hybrid. Of course the software update would be pushed to all of them regardless and not cost Ford anymore money to do so.

Now for those who had melted part of their engine bay! I don’t see why Ford couldn’t announce repairs for the few that it has negatively impacted.

I’m sorry to say I might go back to getting a RAV4. The problems are stacking up. If I don’t see the writing on the wall who can I blame but my self? Talk me off a ledge before I sell my accessories and politely walk away from Ford’s dumpster fire.

I just thought of this last night.

Had my other car plugged into OBII reader and the catalytic temp was at 1200deg F. It think I had previously seen it at 1400. Quick google said normal is 1200-1600 operating.

Curious if the vehicle has built-in safe "limp mode" since the cat is obviously being monitored.

Perhaps (HOPING) that although it would seem crazy that a CHERRY RED cat that is melting the heat shield is not the best-case scenario or good it's within "limits" they deem safe......IDK grasping at straws.

🤷‍♂️

Who knows if the software would shut it down in that scenario anyway since its glitching in the first place....

I hope the software update doesn’t just disable the ability to heat the cab while using remote start.

Yup. I need it mainly for the AC to cool the truck but I would like to heat my truck whenever we do have some chilly mornings. I’m in Southern CA so the coldest it usually gets is around 40F

This particular issue is becoming a bigger concern for me, especially since Ford does not seem to be acknowledging or addressing it. Lots of people experiencing this, lots of people guessing whats wrong and how to fix.

Maybe buying a 1st year model was not a good idea....
Manufactures normally have to be pushed, Porsche with the IMS bearing issues BMW with the TU63 engine issues, MB with the Head Bolts on their M154 engines.

That's T-shirt temperatures.

Isn’t heating the cab the entire reason for remote start?
To me it is. Personally I don't care but that's the only reason I would use it. I guess you could leave the heat off while the engine warms up so it's ready to deliver heat once you get in it, but does the hybrid ICE even start under those circumstances?

I'm planning to use the block heater until I'm absolutely positive this is fixed. Hopefully they will replace the Catalytic on those that were glowing red.
