Looks like they direct and smooth airflow but still force it into a smaller cross section. I don't want to start a 5 page debate here. I would suggest that any who doubt this very old and basic principle just do a google search for fluid/aerodynamics. Engineers understand this very well but even some skilled mechanics do not. A funnel shaped intake just looks so right, hey lets scoop up lots of air, unfortunately that is not how it works. Do some research, WW2 aircraft were making between 1500 and 2800 hp, look at how small the air intakes are. Also, one can go to any airport and look at how small the engine cooling intakes are. Air cooled GA engines use pressure cooling, small openings baffled to produce the necessary flow around the finned cylinders. Also look at modern sportbikes with ram air, very small intakes to feed nearly 200hp.
