Finally, and this truly sucks, any non-instrumented non laboratory tests we might perform are largely useless. I speak from long experience, worked at several gas stations, dad had a gas station repair shop business. This could be another entire thread but I will ask you to trust me on this one...
Octane rating. octane rating is simply a fuels resistance to knock, nothing to do with how much energy the fuel contains. Lab techs. take an engine with variable compression, incrementally increase compression with a given fuel until detonation/knock occurs and can then assign the anti...
There have been many advances which drive detonation ever higher in the performance envelope. Years ago to compression was the norm, now we have engines running 10 or even 12 to 1 compression on 87 octane pump gas. The younger crowd will attribute this to electronic engine management which...
This comes up endlessly on forums. Much confusion. First there is confusion as to what preignition and detonation are. I believe the myth of higher octane providing more power is purely by its only energy content is understood by most as being false, here is why.
Preignition-is when combustion...
Never actually sat and waited to see if it would eventually shut down again but so far it never has waiting for a typical light. I have not experimented with it much as I only play with it when forgetting to turn it off. I have a Mazda I bought new 18 years ago, manual trans no driver aids other...
Because I drive almost exclusively in sport mode, I am making seven or eight selections every time I start the truck. I paid for the truck, I drive the truck, seems like I should have the option to set it up the way I want to use it. If I am out doing errands I have to go thru the same sequence...
I am not opposed to driver aids in general I simply believe they should be an option. Of course stop start is meant as a fuel saver but I doubt its long term value. I am less concerned with starter wear than I am with the repeated drop of oil pressure.
ok, a bit of background. I am a 69 year old retired professional mechanic, 8 ASE certs, can inspect anything that rolls in NYS, top technician award from US Suzuki, award for the motorcycle road racer I built. Successfully built and flew a small kit plane. Competed in both MX and road racing...
Not wearing the tires because it is not necessary to move them. All that is needed is to move just past free play, as soon as any resistance is encountered the engine starts and will continue to run. Weather used or not it seems like a strange feature.
Can't really accept that as the starter is generally the highest amperage draw and a healthy battery can easily handle that. Also, once started by turning the wheel the engine will continue to run until accelerating away from the stop.
Many of you will likely find out how expensive all of these wonderful electronics are when they fail. Finished my career as a fleet mechanic, so many electronic failures. Great when the work but the truck is dead in the water when they fail. Let me give one, and I must stress this is just one of...
Of course most can be turned off but I am still paying for them. Perhaps I should give some background. Started as a motorcycle snowmobile mechanic in the seventies, top technician from US Suzuki. Raced MX, road raced a Kawasaki EX500, Auto Cross and Time Attack with autos, award for the road...
Also, I would like to state a personal preference, make all these drive aids buyer options. I so wish I could buy a vesicle without ABS, traction control, stability control and all the other nannies. For all those who want them great, you should have access to them, but why should I be forced to...
Every mechanical device ever invented by man has a given number of life cycles. Sometimes these life cycles are so great that very few ever encounter the limits. General aviation is a good example; airplanes of the sixties were never expected to be in use seventy years after initial sale yet...
The vast majority of American drivers are looking for appearance, for the few looking for performance there are some lightweight combinations out there. I saved just over 5 lbs. per corner on my 2024 XL by going to an 18" 235 combination.
