I wanted to share an update on the 12" head unit with Sync 4 that I purchased from Oem Plus. I finally got around to installing it, and the process went smoothly thanks to the clear instructions. The only challenging part was unplugging the connectors from the APIM, which were a bit stubborn, but everything else was straightforward.

I'm really pleased with the outcome. The unit looks completely OEM, and it truly enhances the interior of my Lariat. I believe this unit should have been standard in the Lariat trim. I'm still getting accustomed to some of the settings and the backup camera display, as my eyes were used to the 8" unit.

Overall, I feel it was well worth the $1200, purely for the improved aesthetics.

I've attached a few pictures of the before and after.

Really nice install.

Classes up the 22-24s significantly and gets rid of the crap CTR and Sync 3.

How hard was it to disassemble, and is the replacement screen less grainy / washed out than the original screen?

I don't mind the size of the 1st gen screen since it's about the same as the double DIN aftermarket units I had used for years, but if someone came out with a replacement screen that deleted the cubby for more space + higher resolution with better contrast, for under $400-500, that would be a very compelling upgrade.
Ya, the $1200 price tag would be deal breaker for me. I'm satisfied with the earlier 8" screen and have a hard time justifying the $$ for what I consider a moderate upgrade. I'd rather spend my money on upgrading to the DD fog light kit.
That said, I commend the OP for posting his experience.

There is Sync upgrade for XL/XLT that is more expensive since it is not Sync 3 to 4. The XL/XLT has sync most call 2.5 so it is more to upgrade to 4 than the lariat which has sync 3.
