How does the hybrid offer any benefit (increased fuel economy) on the highway?
The advantage is that the gas engine combined with the eCVT can be controlled by the electronics to run in the most efficient RPM range possible for a given speed. That’s why the hybrid has a higher MPG on the highway than the turbo. Hybrids always have higher city MPG because the electric motor is being used more, either by itself or in combination with the gas engine.

That and the hybrid has a 2.91 rear end 3.63/3.81 in the turbo. That helps the highway milage a lot!

Does it benefit from using adaptive cruise control — does that allow for some regenerative braking on the highway or is it too minimal to hand an effect?

Absolutely. Adaptive Cruise is more likely to apply regen braking early and often to adjust speed vs you using the brake pedal. Will keep the speed more consistent

Like many hybrids the Maverick uses an Atkinson cycle engine. This type of engine is a lot more efficient, by some estimates up to 40% efficient at converting gasoline to motion. Atkinson cycle engines suffer from low torque at low RPMs, which benefits greatly when used in combination with hybrid electric drive. The electric motors have outstanding low-end torque.

Escape Hybrid, the Maverick Hybrid is based on, delivers 44 MPG, so 40 MPG on Maverick Hybrid should not be an issue.

Just like the VW diesel forums, pretty soon we’ll be posting photos of our instrument panel MPG readouts and bragging about our mileage 😁

Reminder that if you live anywhere with a winter climate you will see a drop of a few MPG during the winter months. When it’s cold, the battery won’t hold a charge as well and the engine needs to run more to provide the cabin with heat.

In some states, like Minnesota, gas is required to be “oxiginated “ in the winter for emissions purposes. Simply this means that there is alcohol added... alcohol has less energy density than gas, so mileage will decrease in all vehicles.

Pretty sure it is all oxygenated now. I don’t know of any states not selling fuel with 10% ethanol.

Louisiana. Within about 6 miles from me there are 5 ethanol free gas stations.
