why though? lets say it triggers airbag, and the damage is 5k + whatever airbag cost, its stilll totaled? I ask because ive seen this. are AIRBAGS THAT EXPENISVE?

I ran over a piece of broken cinder block on the freeway. Took out the front fascia, radiator, oil cooler, belly skid plate and a few other pieces. $10k damage, no airbags.

Someone came Into my lane and sideswiped me. Took out the door, mirror, fender and damaged the body under the B pillar. $7k damage, no airbags.

Now airbag deployment is an indicator acceleration. It usually takes about 20 G of acceleration to trigger them. If your 3,800 lb maverick hits 20G of acceleration, it means that it absorbed about 77,000 lbs of impact force over 45 milliseconds (Omni online crash calculator). With that much energy deposited over that short of period of time, there will inevitably be bent metal parts that go deep into the structure of the car, not just in surface body panels. Even without the cost of the airbags, it will take 10’s of thousands to fix.

Deployed airbags are an indicator of the extent of damage.

Yeah, any kind of accident is a real bummer.

I got rear ended last year, by an uninsured driver.

Lucky for me, she paid my deductible, after getting billed by USAA. I pay extra to cover uninsured drivers and also gap insurance.

Our trucks are built with safety in mind, and have crumple zones that sometimes make a fairly minor looking rear ended accident, non repairable.

So I figure it's worth paying for extra coverage.

Uninsured drivers should be hung out to dry just like thieves today. Nothing worse than a uninsured driver getting by not paying what they are lawfully required to do, then kill someone or destroy their property, just like a thief. I have no use for a thief.

It was a decade ago that the insurance companies were required to send to the clerks office of the county, cancelled insurance on any vehicle on the road. That did not go over too well, as can be seen, so most I suppose buy a month of insurance, cancel it, drive on after they get their tags. America needs to go back to road inspections. Pull over vehicles they think are in violation. It would'nt bother me to stop and be checked. In the long run, people uninsured would be stopped from breaking the law and ruining people's lives.

Half my cars here have no headlights or body panels and driving around midnight. It’s annoying, they also run red lights etc no license plates.

no Leo at all in this area. Tbh it’s a war here, if they enforce then it’s discrimination on poverty neighborhoods.

No rain. Very good weather. Basically, I was stopped at a red light, it turned green and I accelerated like normal. The lady that hit me ran her red light coming from my right and I just didn’t have time to react. I, luckily, had witnesses.

Painful to look at those photos. So sorry this happened, but yep, I see many people just blowing through red lights as if the laws don't apply to them. Can no longer rely on a red light stopping anyone which is why I take a moment to look before proceeding. I'm sure it was hard to post the damage to your truck, but you can bet many here will be more cautious than usual when that light turns green. Best of luck replacing your Maverick.
