I make it a habit to look both ways and I've been honked at for it before. I try to pay attention to when the light is about to turn, but honestly, I couldn't care less if the people behind me have to sit for 1-3 more seconds.

I've only seen this happen like OP mentioned one time, where they were hauling ass and just blew the red light, and about 4 cop cars followed. Granted, that was in CA (Northwest Mexico) and it was a pretty shady area. I believe they call it... San Diego?

T-boned in a Toyota Tercel by a large Monte Carlo In the 80’s.
I went onto 2 wheels did a donut in the intersection proceeded to travel into 2 parked Mercedes in the dealership parking lot …or least they tell me I did cause I don’t remember I hit my head and I was out. Memory of that whole week still a little fuzzy.
My dad had just bought the car 6 weeks earlier. Insurance pretty much paid for 1/2 the car.
Today, I am the one to get honked at cause I believe a green light means

It is my turn to enter the intersection…AFTER I CONFIRM IT IS CLEAR!

What delay? The engine restarts before my foot gets back to the gas pedal.

It's not just the first guy at the light that is in danger. I see red light runners LONG after the light is red.

I'm cruising up to a green light doing 40 with a white Jeep Liberty tail gating me. I notice to my left that a beater car is going to run the red and Tbone me.

If I braked I would have been creamed, so I punch it (2012 Focus, not much punch) and that was just enough for me to get through the light. I watch in my rear view as he Tbones the Jeep a car length or so behind me.

We're all doomed.

Years ago, my oldest witnessed a nationally televised police shooting while waiting for her next bus (for a really cool summer job!).

I switched from "I'll never buy the car" for the kid (but knowing I'd kick in extra to go from super-cheap to daddy won't need to pay so much for repairs) to "you're not riding a bus again!" and bought a '92 Eldorado Touring Coupe from the lawyer in the next office after his father in law died.

My only reservation was whether or not it was heavy enough to take a hit with my daughters inside.

Within a month of her license, I got called to the scene. It turned out that she was so late into the red light that that she took off the rear end of an asian car turning left across her!

The Eldo took the hit, while the little foreign car was swept off the road. We pulled the fender off the tire, and drove it home, the insurance paid me more after deductible and salvage than I paid for it, and it ran for another year before the oil and water mixed, releasing the magic smoke.

Anyway it was young driver inattention and hubris, yakking with her sister, not charging the light.

Braking is the common reaction, and right more often than not. But sometimes, accelerating to is the right option . . . and I discovered that my Miata really meant it about needing premium when I had absent-mindedly put in regular, needed to accelerate, and it sagged when I gunned it!
