Can you lock/unlock and start/drive a 2024 Maverick XLT with a bare metal ignition key copy from a locksmith or hardware store? No key fob on board, just an old-school key?

I believe on an XL you can get a Key Cut, but it needs to have the PATS chip and be programmed. I think you need to OEM keys to program a new one. But I am not sure. I have the FOB and Push Button Start.

You need a key with the immobilizer chip programmed into the vehicle. I believe StratTec sells these, but due to the cost and hassle, most people just get another full size fob with the remote.

You can get a fobless key, but it has to have an embedded chip, or the truck won't start.

I bought this one and had a local locksmith cut the metal key part for me. Programming is easily done by you, in the truck, following Redneck Garage's great thread on keys. DIY programming requires you have both original keys in your possession.

A local garage in my area went all in for transponder keys for most vehicles, I had him make me one for my XLT & it was under $40, looks like the OP key, no remote but it opens the door & starts the truck. Part of the trick is being able to cut sidecut keys, which most vehicles these days have.

Thanks for the information R-man, I will find out who side-cuts keys near me!
