Hey guys,

I bought my XL two months ago and about one month ago the engine started to get very noisy - like a lot. I don't seen any engine-missfire light but the engine noise is so much louder than when I bought it (it was so silent). Specially when I release the gas pedal - it sounds like a lawn mower.

It really gets a bit better after it heats up. So im not sure if it's because of the cold (about 30 in NJ now) but I wonder what's happening and if I should take the car to the dealer to have it checked.

Thoughts?

Post a video on here. Is this your first direct injection engine? They sound like crap to be honest and these trucks have zero sound insulation under the hood so you are gonna hear alot of injector noise.

@14mustangNJ this had me rolling: "It basically sounds like a pissed off typewriter from decades ago."
Hopefully the clatter of keys settles down quickly!

the weirdest part is that it was a way more silent when I bouugh the truck and the temperature was quite the same. Even these days which are pretty warm (for a February) the engine makes a dirturbing lawn mower noise - specifally when I downshiftt (it makes that heennnnn hennnnnnn). It really improves after like 30 minutes driving but it really pisses me off.

I would accept as it is if the engine was not so quiet when I first got the car.

I jsut think Ford will tell me everything is good even if its not and I'll have to stick with it anyway.

Yep, thats normal direction injection noise. Probably not what you want to hear but its just how its designed.
Well - tnx! not what I wanted to hear but I think it's better than - omg - your engine needs to be replaced and Ford knows about it.

Weirdest part is - until 400 miles the engine sounded like a Bentley - or a Kitten. Os a Kitten on a Bentley. Now sounds like a diesel truck.

I have owned 4 Fords in a row and there are two things I have found:

1. The owner's manual states that 87 octane is just fine but I find they run much better on at least 89 octane. I have owned the NA 2.0, hybrid 2.5 and ecoboost 2.0 and that is always the case. All Ford engines seem to be sensitive to gas quality and octane, often running rough or noisy if there is water or fluctuations in octane.
2. Whenever the engine starts to get noisy or run rough, a bottle of Heet will typically fix the problem. If it is really bad, you might need it on back to back tanks. However, if you run a higher octane you may have to put Heet in less often.

None of this will eliminate the direct injection noises but it will help with the "lawn mower" sounds.
